The Major Gifts Officer will use strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills to develop positive relationships with community members to drive awareness and financial support for Central City Concern (CCC) and its mission to end homelessness. The person in this position is responsible for developing long-term philanthropic relationships with individual donors that have the capacity to make gifts of $2,000 or above. They will work closely with the Director of Donor Relations to create and execute a Major Gifts strategy.

Since 1979, the Portland community has trusted Central City Concern (CCC) to help people create meaningful, long-term change. Every year, we serve more than 13,000 people experiencing or at risk of homelessness with affordable and supportive housing, person-centered health care, addiction recovery and employment assistance. By providing health care, housing, and jobs, CCC is ending homelessness in Portland and helping people achieve their highest potential.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm (Saturdays and Sundays off!)

Location: Downtown Portland, OR

Compensation: $83,000 - $108,000: Commensurate with qualifications and internal equity.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Three years of professional relationship building experience (i.e. fund development, alumni relations, public relations, community organizing, sales, or closely related field).
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate need for attendance at evening and weekend events/meetings as necessary.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 products.
  • Will be required to carry an agency cell phone for work use. Cell phone will be provided by CCC.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, twist, reach, pull and lift heavy objects and climb stairs, with reasonable or no accommodation.
  • Must possess a current driver’s license, pass a DMV background check and be designated an “acceptable” driver as outlined in Central City Concern’s Fleet Safety policy. Must pass an initial drivers training within 60 days of being an approved driver and continued recertification training. Must maintain vehicle insurance coverage of a minimum of $100,000/$300,000 personal auto liability coverage.
  • Must adhere to agency’s non-discrimination policies.
  • Must be able to effectively interact with co-workers and clients with diverse ethnic backgrounds, religious views, political affiliation, cultural backgrounds, life-styles and sexual orientations and treat each individual with respect and dignity
  • Ability to adhere to Central City Concern’s drug-free workplace which encourages a safe, healthy and productive work environment and strictly complies with the Drug-Free Work Place Act of 1988. An employee shall not, in the workplace, unlawfully manufacture, distribute, dispense, possess or use a controlled substance or alcohol.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Some non-profit experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of best practice principles of major gifts management, Moves Management, and prospect research.
  • Basic knowledge of social services landscape in Oregon.
  • Basic knowledge of current political landscape as it pertains to affordable housing, access to healthcare, and re-entry into the job market.
  • Experience using a donor CRM, Salesforce.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of 80-150 major donors, with whom you will build and maintain thoughtful and authentic relationships.
  • Develop and execute individualized stewardship and solicitation plans that include virtual and in-person visits, calls, and written correspondence.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle including discovery, research, acquisition, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Identify new major and planned gift prospects from existing donor lists and other sources.
  • Work with CCC’s program leadership to identify areas of need within the agency where gifts of $10,000 or more could make meaningful impacts.
  • Develop, present, and close customized gift proposals based on donor intent and in alignment with agency needs. Craft genuine thank you letters that ensure donors understand the impact of their philanthropy.
  • Rigorously use Salesforce to track activity, develop reports, and measure portfolio activity and outcomes.
  • Create monthly reports as required by management that accurately reflect portfolio activity and performance.
  • Adhere to all state and federal privacy regulations, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, and to CCC policies and agreements regarding confidentiality, privacy, and security. Support compliance with all privacy and security requirements pursuant to community partners’ and outside providers’ patient confidentiality agreements, including privacy and security requirements for EMR access. This includes immediate reporting of any PHI breach of CCC or outside provider health records to the CCC Legal and Quality departments, as well as to the program administrator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Enthusiasm and confidence for soliciting meaningful gifts in face-to-face meetings with householders or organizational representatives
  • Superb written communication skills, with an emphasis on storytelling. Effective presentation skills including the ability to create slide decks and formal proposals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Self-awareness and discretion. Ability to engage with people of varied backgrounds with empathy, grace, compassion, and sensitivity.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work courteously and effectively communicate with diverse group of employees, co-workers, tenants/clients and general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage time and meet deadlines.
