JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Band Director directs and manages the overall program of

instrumental music for Central Catholic. Provides students with an opportunity to participate in

extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, TAPPS, and district requirements.

Plan activities to achieve archdiocesan, regional, and state recognition.


REPORTS TO: Principal

Contract Period: 10 Months 


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  •  Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic Education and the mission of the school.
  •  Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  •  Upholds the Code of Ethics for Educators and practices the characteristics of a Marianist Education.
  • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
  • Attends and participates in the scheduled In-Service days required by TCCB-ED.
  • Communicates effectively with students, parents, and other employees.
  • Maintains good relationships and works cooperatively with faculty & staff including fellow teachers, supervisors, support staff, pastors and clergy, Archdiocesan officials, parents & students and members of the community.
  • Maintain CCHS standards when handling monies or other forms of payment.
  • Direct instrumental performers, such as marching band, concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
  • Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and TAPPS/UIL activities.
  • Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  • Oversee band booster club, and support band booster club activities.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  • Recommend policies to improve the program.
  • Ensure that programs are cost-effective, and funds are managed wisely.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment and uniforms.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band director(s) and/or coaches.
  • Support all school policies regarding the welfare and education of students.
  • Actively coordinate campus band activities with campus programs/staff and community
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Knowledge of state and TAPPS policies governing band
  • Ability to interpret data and implement policy and procedures
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong initiative and desire to work in a highly collaborative environment
  • Able to manage student behavior
  • Able to communicate effectively in both reading and writing
  • Skill in critical thinking and job planning

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary: Based on years of teaching experience and commensurate with qualifications

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree – (Music Education or other related subject)
  • Valid Texas teaching Certificate or 12 Credits in Education
  • Minimum of three (3) years of music teaching/band director (or assistant) experience at the high school level
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of background check

MENTAL/ PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Able to lift or carry supplies, textbooks, furniture, and or equipment
  • Able to maintain composure and avoid inappropriate displays of anger
  • Required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, hear & see and speak on a daily basis
  • Required to perform repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing & reading
  • Required to monitor students in a variety of locations including those with loud noises
  • Frequent city travel and occasional statewide travel
  • Prolonged and irregular hours
  • Exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather
