Position Summary
The Grounds Worker is primarily responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, cleanliness, and overall condition of the college’s grounds and outdoor spaces. This position performs routine landscaping, groundskeeping, irrigation, equipment care, and exterior preventative maintenance. The Grounds Worker also assists with custodial duties, building maintenance, campus events, and other Physical Plant responsibilities as needed.
Essential Job Functions
Perform general grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, weed eating, blowing, and leaf removal.
Clean, mulch, weed, and maintain flowerbeds, landscaped areas, shrubs, and trees.
Trim hedges, shrubs, low tree limbs, and other vegetation as needed
Keep sidewalks, parking areas, entrances, roadways, and other outdoor spaces free of grass clippings, leaves, garbage, and debris.
Collect and properly dispose of litter and waste throughout the campus.
Learn, operate, monitor, and assist with maintaining campus irrigation systems.
Identify and report damaged landscaping, irrigation problems, unsafe conditions, and other campus concerns
Perform seasonal grounds work, including planting, pruning, storm cleanup, and preparation for changing weather conditions.
Follow established groundskeeping schedules and checklists to maintain consistent standards of excellence.
Maintain a daily record of completed assignments and checklist items.
Safely operate lawnmowers, tractors, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, sprayers, and other grounds equipment.
Perform routine preventative maintenance and servicing of lawn and grounds equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, blade care, and basic repairs.
Assist with preventative maintenance and minor repairs to building exteriors, sidewalks, fences, signs, drainage areas, and other outdoor facilities.
Assist Physical Plant personnel with basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general maintenance projects as directed.
Assist custodial personnel when needed to support clean, safe, and healthy campus buildings.
Assist with the setup and teardown of campus events and ministries.
Open or close buildings for events and ministries when assigned.
Perform other related duties assigned by the Director of Physical Plant or other appropriate administrators.
General Requirements
Working knowledge of groundskeeping practices, lawn-care equipment, and basic hand and power tools.
Ability to safely operate, clean, and maintain groundskeeping equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and complete assigned checklists.
Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and report maintenance concerns promptly.
Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and manage time effectively.
Ability to work independently while contributing to the overall Physical Plant team.
Ability to communicate professionally with students, employees, vendors, visitors, and administrators.
Basic computer skills and the ability to use electronic work-order, checklist, or task-tracking systems.
Basic knowledge of cleaning products, lawn-care chemicals, and their safe handling and storage.
Dependability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Willingness to adjust work schedules for seasonal needs, special events, emergencies, or campus priorities.
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk or stand for extended periods, including more than 90 percent of the workday when necessary.
Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, push, pull, and reach repeatedly.
Ability to use both hands, arms, and legs when operating equipment and completing assigned work.
Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, humidity, and other changing weather conditions.
Ability to safely operate motorized lawn and grounds equipment.
Qualifications and Education
High School Diploma or GED required
Previous groundskeeping, landscaping, lawn-care, or related maintenance experience preferred.
Knowledge of commercial lawn-care equipment required.
Experience with irrigation systems and small-engine maintenance preferred.
Basic building-maintenance experience is beneficial.
Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record may be required.
Job Expectations
The Grounds Worker must represent the college professionally through personal conduct, communication, appearance, and quality of work. The employee is expected to take ownership of the condition and appearance of the campus grounds while supporting the broader work of the Physical Plant Department wherever assistance is needed.
