About the Responsibilities

An Electric Engineer or Senior Electrical Engineer, Reliability Engineering, applies and further develops their knowledge, experience, and skills to provide Engineering support to the organization to ensure suitable reliability, availability and maintenance of electrical equipment at the Central Arizona Project.

This role is well suited for an Electrical Engineer who has knowledge and experience with large motors, transformers, and other substation equipment and wants to apply and further develop their knowledge and skills related to equipment health assessment, evaluation, and engineering support activities through both formal and on-the-job training. This job is for you if you enjoy both in-office engineering work and time in the field around the equipment you are evaluating and supporting.

The Electrical Engineer, Reliability Engineering, is a key member of CAP’s asset management team and will use analysis, experience, and organization support to make near term and long term recommendations for equipment maintenance, modification, or replacement. They will regularly perform assessment, evaluation, and engineering support activities for large synchronous motors and generators, transformers, backup power generator sets, excitation systems, circuit breakers, switchgear, protective relays, UPS systems, facilities, cable systems and other auxiliary equipment. This includes high, medium and low voltage systems.

Some of the specific duties include:

  1. Use, manage, and further develop asset condition assessment models that use predictive maintenance data to compute condition scores and grades for all major assets.
  2. Utilize maintenance history and condition assessment data to recommend adjustments to equipment maintenance plans and to drive near-term and long-term capital decisions related to asset repair/refurbishment/replacement.
  3. Support and oversee predictive maintenance programs such as motor circuit analysis, transformer electrical equipment testing, transformer oil analysis, and thermography.
  4. Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for major equipment failures and provide front line engineering support including troubleshooting and problem solving for major electrical equipment.
  5. Utilize reliability engineering tools, methods, and best practices [Condition Based Monitoring (CBM), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)] to evaluate equipment and recommend improvements to achieve optimum equipment performance, safety, and reliability at minimum cost.
  6. Support the development, review, and modification of maintenance procedures, guidelines, and schedules for electrical equipment.
  7. Member of the Engineering team supporting the design and construction of major asset modifications and capital replacement projects.

About the Qualifications

For the Engineer position:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field plus five (5) years total Electrical or Protective Relay Engineering experience
  • Advanced degree or other related experience may substitute for up to two years of Electrical Engineering experience.


Required Certifications or Licenses:

  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and requires physical testing.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP).

For the Senior Engineer position:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field plus eight (8) years total Electrical or Protective Relay Engineering experience. OR, an advanced degree plus 6 years of Electrical or Protective Relay Engineering experience.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional.

*Twelve (12) years total Electrical or Protective Relay Engineering experience is required if none of the certifications or licenses above are held.


Demonstrated ability to perform all of the items listed below:

  • Advanced troubleshooting of equipment similar to that utilized at CAP.
  • Utilization of test data and observation to develop a complete view of asset health.
  • Development of equipment maintenance plans.
  • Effectively interface with contractors, field personnel and other engineers.
  • Recommend capital expenditure decisions based on asset history and current status.


Required Certifications or Licenses:

  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and requires physical testing.
