Fiber Technician (Splicer)


Job Summary:

 

The Fiber Technician (Splicer) is responsible for the installation, splicing, maintenance, and repair of CentraCom’s fiber optic network. This position ensures high-quality and reliable fiber connectivity for residential and commercial customers by performing precision splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation. The Fiber Technician also supports new construction, fiber restoration, and network expansion projects, working both independently and collaboratively with team members to maintain CentraCom’s industry-leading fiber network standards. Must live in the Sevier County area...or close to it.


Key Responsibilities:

 

  1. Fiber Splicing & Installation
  • Break down and prepare fiber optic cable for installation into fiber closures, ensuring cables are properly sealed and protected from environmental elements.
  • Perform fusion splicing on main fiber cables in the field and within central offices (COs).
  • Terminate and install fiber ends in Fiber NIDs (Network Interface Devices) and Fiber Panels at customer sites for a clean, reliable connection to network equipment.
  • Conduct aerial and underground installations, including placing new MSTs, drops, and mainline cables.
  1. Testing, Troubleshooting & Maintenance
  • Use specialized tools such as VFLs (Visual Fault Locators), light sources, and OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers) to test and verify fiber performance.
  • Scope and clean all fiber ends and connectors to ensure optimal signal quality and minimal loss.
  • Identify and resolve network issues quickly and effectively to minimize downtime.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance to ensure overall network reliability and performance.
  • Work during maintenance windows (typically 12 a.m. – 5 a.m.) when necessary to avoid service disruption for customers.
  • Remain on call 24/7 for emergency restoration and fiber cut repairs.
  1. Documentation & Mapping
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of splicing activities, including locations, cable types, splice results, and test data.
  • Provide documentation for network mapping, future reference, and quality assurance.
  1. Communication & Team Collaboration
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and customers to coordinate fieldwork and service restoration.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and strong interpersonal skills when interacting with customers or external partners.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support construction, installation, and maintenance objectives.
  1. Construction & Field Work
  • Excavate or dig (using shovel or excavator) to bury conduit for fiber installation.
  • Use appropriate tools and equipment to clean and prepare conduit for fiber pulling.
  • Install fiber by pulling, pushing, or blowing cable through conduit systems.
  • Operate bucket trucks to perform aerial installations on strand, including MSTs, drops, and trunk fiber cables.
  • Assist in designing conduit routes, fiber counts, handholes, and pedestal placements for FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) deployments in towns and subdivisions.

Qualifications:

 

Education & Experience

  • Proficiency with fiber splicing tools, OTDRs, and testing equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of aerial and underground construction practices.

 

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for precision splicing.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret network drawings, schematics, and maps.
  • Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Commitment to safety procedures and quality workmanship.
  • Availability for on-call rotations and emergency response work.

Work Environment:

  • Field-based role with frequent travel between job sites.
  • Work performed outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Occasional night and weekend work required for maintenance windows or emergency response.
  • Requires use of bucket trucks, splicing trailers, and test equipment.
