Summary:
A phlebotomist is a medical professional responsible for drawing blood from pediatric patients (5 years minimum) while ensuring strict safety precautions to prevent contact with infectious blood and bodily fluids.
Responsibilities:
- Patient Preparation: Interview and prepare the patient for the blood draw, following established protocols to minimize anxiety and discomfort.
- Record Keeping: Accurately label and store blood specimens for testing purposes, adhering to quality control standards.
- Venipuncture Techniques: Determine the suitable venipuncture method based on patient age, health, and other factors.
- Specimen Collection: Assemble necessary supplies and equipment for specimen collection, prioritizing Stat, timed, or routine tests accordingly.
- Communication: Reassure patients, answer questions, and provide useful information to ensure a smooth experience.
- Safety Protocols: Use appropriate personal protective equipment, maintain a clean environment, and follow proper disposal procedures for sharps, needles, and medical waste.
- Sample Quality: Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples for testing purposes.
- Patient Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality throughout the process.
- Covid-19 Testing: Collect and process Covid-19 tests as trained.
Requirements:
- Education: High school degree or equivalent, with a preferred Phlebotomy Technician certificate or completion of a hospital or major lab training program.
- Experience: 5 years of proven experience as a phlebotomist, demonstrating understanding of standard blood drawing practices and procedures.
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication, flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts.
- Additional Requirements: Valid State-issued driver's license with a good driving record, adequate automobile insurance, and a vehicle in good driving condition.
