SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Pre-operative/PACU/OR Circulating Nurse is accountable and responsible for the services provided in the pre-operative and recovery areas and the OR. The Pre-operative/PACU/OR Circulating Nurse reports to the Director of Nursing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintains quality patient care and patient education, in accordance with written policies and standards of care.
2. Supervises the pre-operative and recovery staff, and spearheads the daily staffing.
3. Ensures adherence to Surgery Center policies, procedures, and safety programs.
4. Maintains clinical skills and knowledge.
5. Performs the orientation of new employees in the pre-operative and recovery areas.
6. Assesses the staff's educational needs and implements a plan to meet these needs.
7. Maintains an adequate inventory of drugs and medical supplies in the pre-operative and recovery areas.
8. Maintains a collegial relationship with physicians to ensure quality patient care.
9. Develops and monitors standards of care.
10. Participates in and monitors quality improvement programs.
11. Fosters a positive environment which promotes staff development and loyalty to the organization.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
13. Provide communication between team members in the surgical field and persons outside the operating room.
14. Obtains needed supplies and equipment for each specific procedure.
15. Assures adequate amounts of surgical supplies are in the operating room.
16. Verifies suction, lights and other needed equipment are functioning properly.
17. Opens sterile supplies, assists scrub tech, assists anesthesia team.
18. Completes operative record.
19. Maintains knowledge of drugs used and can administer drugs safely.
20. Is familiar with supplies, equipment, and medications on the crash cart and able to assist in the event of a cardiac arrest.
21. Orders supplies and medications.
22. Team player who contributes to building the team by helping others succeed through role modeling and mentoring.
23. Shares knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues.
24. Promotes patient safety initiatives (ex: National Patient Safety Goals).
25. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, evaluate and implement a patient plan of care according to the individual needs of the patient as prescribed by physician.
26. Assesses patient reports/records change of condition and notifies physician and/or intervenes appropriately and documents accordingly.
27. Accepts assignments in all areas and performs duties within individualized competency.
28. Meets time and attendance guidelines per surgery center policy.
29. Utilizes effective time management skills to complete assigned duties and responsibilities within established work shift.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Current licensure in PA as a registered nurse.
2. Progressive work experience in Pre-Op/OR/Recovery Room of no less than three (3) years which reflects both clinical and management skills.
3. Current BCLS certification; ACLS certification preferred.
4. Competence in oral and written communication skills.
5. Intermittent physical mobility/activity including walking, standing, sitting, light lifting, pulling and pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist; be able to kneel.
