HJF is seeking a Research Technician II to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with various testing, assays, and experiments. Provides support in various areas of a laboratory as needed. Complies with laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) plans and procedures.

This position will be in support of the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) at Fort Sam Houston. NAMRU-SA is a major research and development center whose mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research, to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Its purpose is to provide non-personal support services to NAMRU-SA. Performance will include intramural research and development (R&D) support services for four (4) scientific directorates and their respective departments: Directed Energy Health Effects Directorate (DEHE), Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate (CCC&OM), Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate (CH&RM), and Research Services Directorate (RSD).

This effort primarily entails investigative studies which involve planning, coordinating, designing, and executing experimental protocols that meet both directorate-level research objectives and the command mission.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position is contingent on contract award.


Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree, Bachelor's degree preferred with 2 years' research experience OR Master's degree

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines.
  • Knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal .
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance , including background check and drug screening.
  • All staff required to enter the labs shall maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

  • Responsible for supporting laboratory-based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards the solution of a broad range of theoretical and practical problems in the areas of trauma, hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed energy health effects, and craniofacial health and trauma.
  • Sets up, operates, and calibrates laboratory equipment in accordance with research protocols.
  • Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures.
  • Assists in the maintenance of a clean and operational lab space.
  • Assists in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies for research.
  • Conducts and supports surgical procedure, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping for contract personnel, and ensuring specific pathogen free techniques.
  • Handle and restrain (daily) various small and large animal species.
  • Maintains in vitro models, to include complex/3D tissue culture, bacterial cultures, fungal culture, etc.
  • Compiles and may analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Assists with writing and editing material for publication and presentation.
  • Reports on status of research activities.
  • Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products.
  • Maintains data and records securely, including the use of an assigned laboratory notebook.
