Position Summary: The Director will work within a team setting to provide strategic leadership, operational oversight, development support, and coordination for patient safety programs undertaken by the Center. This position is primarily responsible for managing and executing CPS’s PSO activities outside Emergency Medical Services (EMS), with support from other team members. While this is not strictly a sales position, the Director will be expected to participate in appropriate networking and other activities to promote the PSO and to reinforce the Center’s position in the PSO community, including speaking and conference attendance. The Director will also contribute to other CPS programs as needed and appropriate and will be a member of CPS’s Executive Team.


The Setting: This is a remote position with somewhat flexible full-time work hours. The Director must be available as needed during normal working hours for meetings, client calls, etc., and must be available for some travel for client service and conference purposes.


The Company: The Center for Patient Safety is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to improving patient safety and quality. Clients include hospitals, outpatient providers, specialty providers, and EMS. CPS’s work centers around its status as a Patient Safety Organization (PSO). Its strength lies in the ability of its dedicated and highly skilled people to meet changing client needs creatively, living up to the description “little but mighty.”


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


·        Develop, execute, and evaluate the Center for Patient Safety’s PSO projects and activities, safety culture training, and safety/quality improvement projects in the Hospital and Ambulatory space.

·        Provide education and training to clients within assigned projects.

·        Serve as part of a team of internal subject matter experts on PSO and patient safety and safety science concepts.

·        Contribute to the compilation and dissemination of client and funder feedback materials, such as project reports and data analysis.

·        Contribute to developing presentations, training materials, and communication support to promote the activities of CPS. Participate in client training as needed.

·        Identify opportunities to involve diverse healthcare providers and other stakeholders in CPS activities.

·        Lead the growth and expansion of the Center's lines of business with a focus on expanding Hospital and Ambulatory PSO services. 

·        Complete ongoing activity reports regarding assigned areas of responsibility within expected time frames.

·        Participate with other directors on the Center’s leadership team.

·        Create and maintain files, databases, and reports as required.

·        Participate in the Center’s Executive Leadership Team, together with the EMS Safety Director, the Survey Services Director, and the Executive Director.



PSO-Related Duties and Responsibilities


·        The Director must be (or immediately become) familiar with the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 and its associated regulations to provide information and coaching for PSO participants and incorporate those requirements into the rest of their work. (CPS provides legal expertise to support this requirement.)

·        Demonstrate an appropriate understanding of clinical care, processes, and practices as a member of the PSO workforce.

·        Support the implementation of PSO services with new clients and coordinate the ongoing needs and support of the PSO relationship. All professional staff members are expected to develop sufficient knowledge to participate in PSO support.

·        Develop an in-depth understanding of the PSO database and critical steps of the onboarding process in order to function as a working manager in that area. 

·        Maintain confidentiality and security of Patient Safety Work Product (PSWP) to which employee has access, in compliance with the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 and its implementing regulation and Center Policy. Comply with applicable provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”).

·        Assist in the development of reports and presentations utilizing PSO data and information, including PSWP, as obtained from PSO participants or developed by the PSO. Utilize the data and other information to formulate programming for CPS clients and the community.

·        Complete annual PSO security and confidentiality workforce training and annual HIPAA training.


Supervisory Responsibilities                                                   


This job has no current supervisory responsibilities. The Director may be responsible in the future for overseeing individuals performing work in support of the responsibilities listed above. CPS employees function as a team, and each director is responsible for coordinating and overseeing activities in their assigned space.lities

Qualifications: Education and/or Experience                                                 


·        Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required. Master’s degree is preferred.

·        License/registration in a clinical field is preferred. Relevant experience demonstrating similar knowledge and skills will be considered.

·        Current Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) or willingness to accomplish certification within one year. May meet this requirement with an equivalent and relevant certification.

·        Experience working with performance improvement/quality management programs is required.

·        Successful experience in project management is required.

·        Experience in working successfully with various types of organizations and individuals or working successfully across several departments in a large healthcare setting is preferred.

·        Previous experience developing and delivering presentations and teaching is required.

·        Experience in evaluating systematic process improvement and activities is required.

Salary : $80,000 - $115,000
