What is the job?

We are seeking a 1:1 Teacher’s Aide to work directly with students who are Deaf, DeafPlus, and/or those with additional language, physical, or medical challenges. You will provide direct support to the student’s educational experience to enhance their language, social, and cognitive growth.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:45 AM – 12:30 PM. Thursdays include extended hours for team meetings until 2:30 PM (three times a month).

Flexibility: If the assigned student is absent, there is a possibility of being excused from your shift or assigned as a classroom floater. Additionally, candidates are invited to serve as on-call substitutes during afternoon programming if they desire additional hours.

What are we looking for?

We seek a kid-loving, patient, and positive individual who wants to work alongside and learn from a highly skilled team of early education professionals. We are looking for someone who wants to build their skills by way of supporting a child directly in their speech and language development and occupational therapy skills and is open to learning about childhood development.

The 1:1 aide will work directly with a student and will provide basic needs of the student; encourage increased communication in sign language, speech, or other alternative methods; help increase motor development skills, including integrating occupational therapy goals, function more independently and safely engage in the educational environment.

Given the complexities of our students' needs, the ideal candidate must be comfortable communicating with parents, specialists, nurses, and Applied Behavior Analysts (ABAs). You must also be comfortable with tasks including, but not limited to: toileting/diapering support, managing body fluids, providing physical support to non-ambulatory students, and assisting with medical devices (such as respirators).

Your Responsibilities:

• Implement learning goals for student with the support of a highly trained team
• Work with student individually in small group settings
• Support student to engage with peers
• Provide daily opportunities to increase communication skills and improve motor/ambulatory development
• Support transitions from activity to activity with attention to proper seating and positioning
• Assist with self-care needs including diaper changes, toileting, hand washing, feeding, etc.
• Accompany the student to occupational, physical, or speech therapy sessions; implement learned strategies in daily activities to ensure continued growth
• Maintain accurate records of student progress and provide regular feedback to the Lead Teacher
• Work cooperatively with teacher, speech therapist, occupational therapists, consultants, and other staff
• Attend meetings and in-service trainings as necessary
• Support with classroom set up and clean up
• Maintain dependable and timely attendance

Qualifications:

• Sign Language: Familiarity and/or a willingness to learn in an immersive environment.
• Technical Knowledge: Knowledge or willingness to learn about AAC devices, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone-anchored hearing aids.
• Energy & Presence: High energy for working with young children; ability to be expressive with face and body to support communication.
• Temperament: Patience, a positive attitude, and comfort working in a team-oriented environment.
• Reliability: Proven ability to self-manage, follow through on educational plan recommendations, and maintain consistency.
• Engagement: Creative, thoughtful, and playful with children; strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to lift or support children up to ~40 lbs; capable of identifying and monitoring special needs.
• Growth Mindset: Willingness to learn and adapt through on-the-job training.

Desirable Skills

• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) or Spanish.
• Early Childhood Education (ECE) or child development coursework.
• Experience with Deaf culture and the history of Deaf education.
• Knowledge of adaptive equipment and community resources for children with multiple special needs.
• Experience working as an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapist.
• Experience using pictures or AAC devices; hearing aids, cochlear implants, or bone anchor hearing aids.

What we offer:

Wages are based on qualifications and experience, $20-22/hour.

As this is a part time position working less than 32 hours per week, benefits are not offered except for sick time per California requirements.
