Compensation range: $140,000 – $168,000 per annum

Summary

American Progress is seeking a mission-driven, energetic, and strategic human resources leader. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations and leadership experience in a union environment. They will have the tenacity and drive to recruit, develop, and elevate current and future leaders of the progressive movement. They will possess strong, contemporary people and human resources capabilities and have a proven track record of building an employee-centric culture.


The Vice President will lead a team of human resources professionals, focusing on the areas of recruitment, compliance, employee relations, performance, and benefits. The Vice President will be responsible for setting, enforcing, evaluating, and communicating legally compliant human resources policies, procedures, and best practices, as well as identifying and implementing long-range strategic talent-management goals. They will serve as a strategic thought partner to the organization, charged with providing leadership that supports high performance and strong team culture across all departments and at all levels.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement talent management strategies that support American Progress’ long-term mission and organizational priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with all employment, benefits, insurance, safety, and regulatory requirements while maintaining current knowledge of employment law and HR best practices.
  • Lead the HR team using data-driven approaches to identify priorities, assess challenges, and establish key performance indicators for human resources functions.
  • Partner across the organization—including with union leadership—on talent strategy, employee engagement, and organizational problem-solving.
  • Research and maintain competitive compensation, benefits, performance appraisal, and incentive programs.
  • Analyze and provide regular reports on key HR metrics, including but not limited to turnover, headcount, compensation trends, engagement, and productivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements and qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Excellent judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail, with demonstrated discretion and respect.
  • Outstanding relationship-building abilities, with strong emotional intelligence and clear communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives while acting with decisiveness, resilience, and integrity.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution capabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with cultural competence across diverse constituents and communities.
  • Strong executive presence with the highest level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality when handling sensitive matters.
  • Minimum 10 years of human resource management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field; master’s degree or Juris Doctor highly preferred.
  • SHRM Certified Professional or Senior Certified Professional certification strongly preferred.

American Progress offers a full and competitive benefits package. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is not represented by a union and has a salary range of $140,000–$168,000 per annum. Final salary may be above the posted range commensurate with experience.
