Job Title:ControllerFLSA Classification:ExemptFacility Location:Boulder, CO / Position is Hybrid with three (3) days in office each week.Department:FinanceReports to:Chief Executive OfficerSalary Range$150,000 to $185,000 base salary, depending on experience.About Centaurus FarmsAt Centaurus Farms we develop cannabis cultivation and production facilities and produce high-quality flower and extracted products. We are the parent company operating businesses in Colorado and Kentucky and are exploring opportunities for expansion in Delaware and other locations.Every time we grow something we record what went in, what came out, what was different, was it as good as last time — or better. The next time we grow the same strain we use the data to get it right rather than relying on someone’s memory. There is no shortcut. Plants take their time. We just make sure we learn everything we can every time we cultivate, harvest, or trim something. Craft sets our standards. Consistency sets our schedule. Quality is what we deliver to our customers — every time. All part of our focused vision and what makes us a different strain of cannabis company. The roleYou will own the books of a two-state cannabis operator and do much of the work yourself. 14er grows, manufactures, and sells cannabis in Colorado and is launching a medical cannabis operation in Kentucky. Finance has been outsourced until now. This is the first full-time finance hire, and the job is to build a function the business can rely on.
  • Reports to: CEO
  • Team: one bookkeeper today; you will shape what comes next
  • Works closely with: the Senior Analyst, operations and cultivation leaders in both states, outside tax and audit firms
  • Location: Boulder, Colorado. Hybrid, with Tuesday through Thursday in the office as the minimum. Expect more days on site in the first months, to see how the facilities run and get to know the teams, and whenever the work calls for it. Periodic travel to Kentucky
What you will own
  • The close. Monthly close for the parent company and every operating entity, including intercompany activity, consolidated across Colorado and Kentucky on a fixed calendar.
  • The parent company's books. Debt, related-party balances, shared costs, and how those costs are allocated to the operating businesses.
  • Inventory value and cost accounting. Product costs by SKU through cultivation, extraction, manufacturing, and packaging. Operations owns the physical inventory, the counts, and the system records. You own its value on the books and the monthly reconciliation between the two.
  • The inventory and manufacturing system. Lead the finance side of our rollout, Kentucky first and then Colorado: item master, bills of materials, inventory states, and the link to the general ledger.
  • Tax and compliance. Cannabis-specific cost allocation, state and local excise filings, sales tax, and the working relationship with our outside tax preparer and auditors.
  • Cash and lenders. Cash forecasting, payables and receivables, payroll oversight, banking in a cash-heavy business, loan schedules, and lender reporting.
  • Budgets and reporting. Budget versus actual by department each month, reviewed with the leaders who own the spending.
  • Controls. Practical controls over cash, inventory, purchasing, and approvals.
  • The team. Manage the bookkeeper and decide what the function needs as Kentucky grows.
Your first 90 days
  1. By day 30: you run the monthly close yourself and have a written close calendar.
  2. By day 60: inventory on the books reconciles to physical counts at every site, with differences explained.
  3. By day 90: product costs for Kentucky are set up in the inventory system, and department leaders receive budget versus actual every month.
What we are looking for
  • A hands-on controller. You have closed the books yourself, recently, at a company with a small finance team.
  • Inventory and cost accounting experience. At least eight years in accounting, including time at a manufacturer, food or consumer products company, agricultural producer, or cannabis operator.
  • Multi-entity experience. You have consolidated several entities and worked across more than one state.
  • A system implementation behind you. You have set up or migrated an ERP or inventory system and lived with the result.
  • Comfort with owners and operators. You can explain numbers plainly to people who run grow rooms and production lines.
  • CPA preferred. Cannabis experience is a plus but not required; we would rather have strong cost accounting.
Tools and systems
  • QuickBooks: advanced, across several entities, including class and location tracking. You know where it runs out and what to do about it.
  • Excel: advanced. Pivot tables, lookups, and large reconciliations built so someone else can follow them.
  • An ERP or inventory system with bills of materials and product costing: NetSuite, SAP Business One, Sage, or similar.
  • State track-and-trace (Metrc): a plus, and you will learn it quickly if you have not used it.
  • Payroll and bill-payment platforms: working familiarity.
This role is not for you if
  • You want to lead a large team or spend most of your time on strategy.
  • You expect clean books on day one. They are improving, and finishing that work is the job.
Physical Demands
  • Sedentary Exertion: Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, or a negligible amount of force frequently, to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects (including paperwork and light office supplies).
  • Stationary Position: Remains in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods, typically 75% to 80% of the workday.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Constantly operates a computer, keyboard, mouse, calculator, and other office productivity machinery to analyze complex financial data.
  • Communication & Exchange: Frequently communicates, expresses oneself, and exchanges accurate information verbally and in writing during board meetings, executive briefings, and financial presentations.
  • Visual Acuity: Requires close visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to prepare and analyze data, view a computer monitor, and read extensive legal, regulatory, or financial documents.
  • Mobility: Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, and meeting rooms.
This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
