Position Summary:
The Alaska Site Pathology Technician is responsible for helping to manage the overall workflow of the laboratory. Pathology Technicians at our hospital laboratory sites are responsible for providing a wide variety of technical and administrative support including specimen accessioning, scheduling and performing procedures, resolving discrepancies, as well as providing general procedural support to pathologists and hospital staff and physicians. This position requires great flexibility, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. The Technician is responsible for adhering to HIPAA standards and strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace.
Position Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00am-4:30pm) with rotations between sites. Rotating weekend on-call.
Essential Duties:
- Intakes and accession specimens accurately and timely
- Schedules and assists with patient procedures performed at the hospital which may include but are not limited to frozen sections, FNA procedures, bone marrow biopsies, CT/US procedures, etc.
- May assist with processing cytology specimens
- Assists with quality assurance and fulfilling compliance requirements
- Prepares reagents
- Pick up and deliver specimens, supplies, reports, etc, between clients and laboratory
- Perform maintenance and daily operational tasks
- Troubleshoots and helps resolve issues between departments and/or clients
- Trains new staff and performs competency assessments as needed
- Provides pathologists support which includes but is not limited to slide distribution and manifest, conference prep, pending lists, and triaging phone calls
- Transports slides, specimens and other material by car between hospital locations and clients
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Experience:
- Combination of High school graduate AND 1 year of relevant clinical/laboratory experience
Or
- Bachelor's in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science strongly preferred
- Preferred skills include:
- Previous experience working a clinical/medical/laboratory environment
- Medical terminology knowledge
- Previous data entry experience
- Previous customer service experience
- Basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Valid driver's license & safe driving record required
