The Principal Project Controls Specialist is an expert-level role within the Project Controls classification hierarchy. This position leads the development and implementation of reporting systems for project controls assignments and performs complex tasks related to estimating, scheduling, change documentation, and cost control. The role supports projects classified as “Brown” or “Black” per the Project Management Center of Excellence Project Profile Matrix, typically ranging from $100M to over $500M in value and involving high complexity. The specialist operates with minimal oversight and is expected to mentor and train other members of the Project Controls organization.

Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of project controls reporting systems.
- Perform advanced estimating, scheduling, cost control, and change documentation.
- Report project controls data at the program or portfolio level.
- Train and mentor junior project controls staff.
- Work independently with wide latitude for unreviewed work.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers/vendors.
- Apply expert-level knowledge of project controls principles and tools.
- Support risk management activities including Monte Carlo analysis.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, project management, engineering, technical field, or equivalent.
- Minimum of 7 years of project controls experience.
- In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 11 years of project controls experience.
- Expertise in project controls principles and practices.
- Mastery of project management and controls concepts, computer applications, and analytics.
- Proven ability in employee development and team collaboration.
- Experience overseeing complex projects with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in business, finance, project management, or related field.
- PMI or AACE certifications (e.g., PMP, CAPM, PMI-SP, AACE-CCC, AACE-PSP, AACE-CEP, AACE-EVP).
- Proficiency in software tools such as:
- MS Project, MS Office Suite
- Primavera
- Business Objects
- Prolog, Passport
- Visio, Powerplant, Emax, PeopleSoft
- Experience with risk management tools and Monte Carlo analysis.
