Electrical Equipment Technician (Trainee)
Location: Norfolk, VA
Job Type: 12 month initial contract
Schedule: 4×10s (Monday–Thursday)
Pay: $20-$30/hour W2
Travel: Within 1 hour of office
Work Environment: 85% field / 15% office; outdoor role in hot and cold weather
Job at a Glance
- 1-year assignment supporting installation, testing, analysis, and replacement of electrical equipment at substations.

Responsibilities
- Participate in installation and commissioning of substation and generation equipment
- Assist in developing Human Performance work zone strategies and transformer processing procedures
- Help procure replacement parts and verify primary equipment operation per specifications
- Engage in acceptance testing of transformers, batteries, circuit breakers, CCVTs, PTs, capacitor banks, and FACTS devices
- Perform oil sampling, infrared thermography inspections, and vacuum bottle testing
- Support maintenance activities and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
- Assist in troubleshooting, environmental compliance strategies, and corrective action activities
- Contribute during nuclear outages as needed and prepare Pre-Job Briefs
- Conduct environmental inspections and apply Cyber Security controls
- Complete all compliance paperwork and perform other assigned duties
- Travel to various substations as needed
Qualifications
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of substation equipment
- Knowledge of circuit analysis, AC/DC machinery, and power systems
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficient in computer applications
- Ability to use multimeters, read control drawings/schematics, and recognize electrical hazards
- Mechanical aptitude
- Basic AC/DC knowledge
- Working knowledge of electrical theory
- Adaptability
Required Experience
- 0–1 years of relevant experience
- Associate's degree or Advanced Post Secondary diploma (or military equivalent) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Electronics Technology, Instrumentation Technology, Mechatronic Technology, or a comparable field OR
- 5 years of military experience including at least 1 year of military technical training/education (including on-the-job training) in electrical theory, AC/DC circuits, basic electrical principles and calculations, Ohm's Law, fault isolation, and multimeter applications
