Corporate Controller
CEGA Innovations, Inc. | Sioux Falls, South Dakota | On-site
The Opportunity
CEGA Innovations is a medical-device company serving hospitals and health systems across the United States. We are seeking a technically strong, hands-on Corporate Controller to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, audit preparation, and the development of internal controls. This is a working leadership role. The Controller will personally review underlying records, resolve accounting questions, and produce work that can withstand rigorous audit scrutiny. The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer and will work with independent auditors, tax advisers, valuation specialists, and outside counsel.
Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including the close calendar, journal entries, estimates, account reconciliations, and review procedures.
- Prepare U.S. GAAP financial statements, supporting schedules, variance analyses, and management reports.
- Maintain accounting policies and documentation standards, and resolve discrepancies between the general ledger and underlying records.
- Develop processes capable of supporting public-company reporting deadlines and assist with financial information and disclosures for registration statements and periodic filings, as applicable.
Audit Leadership
- Serve as the principal day-to-day accounting contact for the independent auditors.
- Coordinate annual audits and interim reviews, including prepared-by-client schedules, confirmations, selections, walkthroughs, and responses to audit questions.
- Prepare and review workpapers that reconcile to the general ledger and source documentation.
- Track audit requests, assign internal owners, enforce deadlines, and escalate unresolved issues promptly.
- Document significant accounting judgments and transactions in technical memoranda; coordinate the resolution of proposed adjustments, audit findings, and control deficiencies.
Technical Accounting
- Research, document, and apply U.S. GAAP to revenue recognition, including customer rebates, fees, and equipment placement arrangements; inventory costing and reserves; equity and stock-based compensation; debt, leases, and contingencies; related-party transactions; and acquisitions.
- Review proposed contracts and significant transactions for accounting implications before execution.
- Monitor relevant accounting standards and coordinate their implementation.
- Work with external specialists on valuations, taxes, and complex equity instruments while retaining ownership of the company’s accounting conclusions and records.
Internal Controls and Systems
- Design, document, and implement practical internal controls over financial reporting, including process narratives, risk-and-control matrices, walkthroughs, and segregation-of-duties reviews.
- Strengthen controls over purchasing, inventory, revenue, receivables, payables, payroll, equity records, cash, and financial reporting.
- Lead the finance workstream for a planned ERP transition, including chart of accounts design, data mapping and validation, opening-balance and subledger reconciliations, financial workflow requirements, cutover documentation, and controls after go-live. Coordinate with the implementation team and preserve access to historical records needed for audit and reporting.
Leadership
- Build and lead the accounting function while remaining directly involved in critical accounting work.
- Set measurable standards for close timeliness, reconciliation quality, and audit readiness.
- Coordinate with operations, sales, supply chain, legal, and HR to obtain complete and timely financial information.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, cash planning, and transaction diligence as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field - an active CPA license preferred.
- At least eight years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including substantial responsibility for financial-statement audits or audit preparation.
- Direct responsibility for audits conducted under PCAOB standards, SEC financial reporting, or preparing financial statements and supporting schedules for an SEC-reporting company.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial-statement preparation, technical accounting research, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and review audit workpapers, reconciliations, financial statements, and technical memoranda.
- Experience personally managing a complete monthly and annual close, or comparable experience that demonstrates readiness to own those processes.
- Hands-on experience with a mid-market or enterprise ERP system, such as Microsoft Dynamics GP, Oracle NetSuite, SAP, or a comparable platform, including strong subledger-to-general-ledger reconciliation discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Public accounting experience on issuer audits conducted under PCAOB standards.
- Experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller; audit leadership experience coupled with direct responsibility for a company’s close is also valued.
- Experience preparing or supporting SEC filings or helping a private company develop public-company reporting processes.
- Medical-device, healthcare, manufacturing, or inventory-intensive industry experience.
- Experience leading the finance workstream of an ERP implementation or migration, particularly a transition to Oracle NetSuite.
- Experience with equity capitalization, stock-based compensation, acquisitions, or financings.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate is technically rigorous, organized, and comfortable taking ownership in a fast-paced environment. They anticipate audit requirements, identify weak support or unreconciled balances early, and follow issues through resolution. They are willing to research a question, draft a memo, review transaction-level support, correct a reconciliation, and drive an audit request to completion.
Compensation
Base salary: $155,000–$195,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience. Performance-based incentive compensation, long-term incentive eligibility, and benefits will be discussed during the hiring process.
