POSITION TITLE: Loan Counselor
DEPARTMENT: Financial Aid
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Financial Aid
FLSA STATUS: Part-time (1400 annual hours), 12 month, non-exempt
POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The loan counselor serves students/prospects by limited counseling them in regard to various sources of financial aid (i.e. federal, state, and institutional), as well as other forms of financial aid (i.e. scholarships, grants, and loans). The Loan Counselor serves the university by delivering excellent customer service and complying with all federal and state laws and regulations, and with all institutional policies and procedures. The Loan Counselor is also responsible to assist with the management of administrative duties that are necessary in the financial aid office. The counselor will participate in various professional associations (NASFAA, MASFAA, OASFAA) and participate in appropriate training opportunities from these associations as well as the US Department of Education (ED) throughout the year.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Maintain knowledge and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and operational guidelines—federal, state, and institutional.
- Trained and/or qualified to provide constituency of available financial aid, to include T-IV, T-VII, T-VIII, state, and institutional funds.
- Ensure clear communication with constituency regarding federal and private loans to include maximum loan borrowing amounts, loan counseling, and providing counseling regarding said loans.
- Understand and operate within the guidelines outlined in the financial aid policies and procedures manual.
- Maintain a rudimentary knowledge of all institutional grants and scholarships
Develop expertise in regulations and process related to direct lending.
Assist in helping the department stay current with regulatory changes related to direct lending.
- Assist in helping to refine processes and procedures related to direct lending.
Review and revise loan packaging
Analyze and calculate student loan eligibility
- Review NSLDS data for transfer students (Pell grants and loans)
- Assist with summer processing
- Understand the DL origination/booking process.
Correct loan files as needed in order to complete origination.
Monitor and update the action code for all financial aid awards.
- Assist with the over award and OVEROK reports.
- Provide limited financial aid counseling to students and parents through office appointments, e-mail communication and phone calls.
- Proactively communicate with students and parents in ways that deliver optimal service and maximizes aid opportunities.
- Supervise activities of assigned student assistants as appropriate.
- Develop proposals and make recommendations to supervisor.
- Maintain accurate computer and paper records for program audit/review purposes as required by federal guidelines.
- Assist with the summer awarding process
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with diverse population.
Experience with operating Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Google e-mail and other similar programs.
Detail oriented
A positive communicator.
Must be able to work independently with a clear understanding of priorities, deadlines and overall goals of the department.
Must be attentive to the service needs of students and be able to evaluate their concerns and provide counsel regarding potential solutions.
REQUIRED MENTAL/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Must have the ability to learn new software programs with little or no training.
Must have the ability to read and interpret general guidelines set forth for federal, state and Institutional financial aid programs.
Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; to compute rate, ratio and percent; and to create charts and graphs from given data.
Must be able to follow oral, written or diagram instructions: and to deal with unique situations.
Must be able to lift and/or move boxes up to 25 pounds; to sit for long periods of time; speak clearly so that others can understand; hear others while on the phone or in person; capability of using a mouse, keyboard, phone pad.
Must exercise excellent communications skills in large group settings, for an extended period of time, and one-on-one presentations.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel unassisted to various locations on and off campus.
Must be able to enter and exit all campus buildings unassisted and to assist disabled persons to enter and exit buildings and vehicles.
