JOB SUMMARY
As the backbone of the Cedarville Police Department, this position is under the general supervision of the ranking officer. The Police Officer performs a wide variety of patrol and related duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances; makes investigations, assists in the preparation of cases and testifies in court; serves in specialized departmental roles as assigned; provides information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a sworn law enforcement classification that performs all non-supervisory assignments found in a municipal police department. Principal duties include response to emergencies, general and directed patrol, investigation of crimes and other non-criminal incidents, traffic enforcement and control, assisting in crime prevention activities, and other law enforcement services and duties as required. A significant degree of initiative, independent judgment, and discretion is required of incumbents to develop, maintain, and successfully perform in a community oriented, problem-solving approach to policing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Answers emergency calls regarding law enforcement matters; enforces City, State, and Federal laws/ordinances and requests for assistance as required.
Secures information from parties at an incident scene and follows through on investigations.
Makes arrests and collects and preserves evidence at a crime scene.
Submits reports or investigations of criminal and non-criminal matters, conducting follow-up investigations on incidents when needed.
Directs traffic at emergency or congested situations.
Utilizes computer equipment to access information and complete reports.
Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to investigation of crime and the apprehension of criminals.
Stops operators of vehicles who violate the law; warn and advise operators of vehicles against unlawful practices and issues citations when applicable.
Operates and maintains departmental equipment.
Administers first aid and CPR as required.
Continually qualifies and trains in the areas of use of force, firearms qualifications, defensive tactics, crowd control techniques, baton usage, domestic violence, and other required mandatory training.
Assists with management tasks during a supervisor's absence, training of new personnel and specialized duties as assigned.
Testifies in court as required.
Promotes good public relations between the city and the general public; assists the public by rendering informational aid and assistance to motorists and other citizens, listening to complaints, etc.
Complies with departmental policies and procedures, rules and regulations, and administrative directives.
Performs related law enforcement duties as assigned and cooperates with other governmental or law enforcement agencies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology and concepts; knowledge and experience in the utilization of technical equipment including computers, cameras, and radar units; and knowledge and skill in the use, care, and safe handling of firearms. Skill in observing and accurately recalling places, names, faces and incidents; skill in making rapid and sound independent judgement within legal and procedural guidelines; and skill in preparing clear, accurate, and grammatically correct reports, records, and other written materials. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others; ability to inspire the trust and confidence of others; ability to quickly learn and retain complex laws, codes and case law pertaining to law enforcement duties; ability to operate patrol vehicles in emergency mode; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, as well as carry out oral and written orders and directions; and ability to develop and maintain successful working relationships with all others encountered in the course of work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Employee frequently is required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Often required to run, jump, push, pull, drive safely at high speeds and adverse conditions, and physically apprehend and subdue suspects. Occasionally lifts and/or moves over 100 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception, the ability to focus, and be free of color blindness. Must be able to go from being seated in a docile position in a police car or office to a highly energized position, and then return to the docile position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employee generally works 10% indoors and 90% outdoors (including time spent in a patrol car or other police vehicle). This job can be very fast paced and may require quick changes in pace within a short period of time. Work performed in an indoor environment is generally in a temperature-controlled office. While performing duties of this job outdoors, the employee is subject to diverse weather conditions at all times of the day and night. Employee is routinely exposed to hazardous situations that may result in injury, death, or use of deadly force on others. The noise level is usually moderate but the employee may occasionally be exposed to high level noises including but not limited to emergency vehicle sirens, gun fire, shouting, and yelling.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must be a U.S. Citizen, be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment, possess a high school diploma or G. E. D. equivalent and possess a valid Ohio driver’s license. Thorough background, education and criminal record checks will be completed. A physical and drug test will be needed prior to employment. Must possess a current Ohio Police Officer's Training Academy certificate for law enforcement.
