Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The Radiologic Technologist III is an advanced imaging professional who independently performs the full spectrum of routine, specialized, and highly complex diagnostic radiographic procedures for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations. Working under the general direction of a Radiologist and Imaging Leadership, this position serves as a resource to staff, providing advanced technical expertise, clinical consultation, workflow coordination, and mentorship to staff while ensuring exceptional patient care and diagnostic image quality.

The Radiologic Technologist III exercises a high degree of independent clinical judgment in prioritizing examinations, resolving technical challenges, supporting physicians during complex image-guided procedures, and participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives. This role partners with leadership to model evidence-based practices, improve operational efficiency, comply with regulatory compliance, and promote a culture of patient safety and continuous learning.

  • Perform routine, specialized, and highly complex diagnostic radiographic examinations independently while ensuring exceptional image quality and patient safety.
  • Evaluate physician orders, patient history, clinical indications, and diagnostic priorities to determine appropriate imaging approaches and examination sequencing.
  • Serve as the clinical expert for complex trauma, surgical, fluoroscopic, portable, and emergency imaging procedures, providing technical guidance to technologists and physicians.
  • Operate advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, including fixed radiographic systems, portable radiography units, C-arm fluoroscopy, O-arm, Navigation and specialty imaging equipment in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Perform and assists Radiologists and physicians during complex fluoroscopic, orthopedic, vascular, pain management, and image-guided procedures while maintaining sterile technique and anticipating procedural requirements. Will rotate to provide coverage for the Spine Center.
  • Independently assess image quality, identify technical deficiencies, perform corrective actions, and optimize imaging protocols to maximize diagnostic accuracy while minimizing repeat examinations.
  • Supports daily departmental workflow by prioritizing examinations based on patient acuity, physician requests, trauma activation, procedural urgency, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as the primary clinical preceptor and mentor for technologists, students, and newly hired staff by providing education, competency validation, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Participates in departmental quality assurance activities, including image quality audits, equipment quality control, repeat analysis, and corrective action planning through staff education to support continuous quality improvement.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, imaging leadership, nursing, surgery, emergency services, rehabilitation, and ancillary departments to improve patient care.
  • Assists in the evaluation, testing, implementation, and optimization of new imaging equipment, software applications, imaging protocols, and departmental workflows.
  • Serves as a clinical preceptor and provides instructions to technologist.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's in Science Degree, Radiological Technology preferred
  • Minimum of an Associate's in Science Degree, Radiological Technology

License/Certifications:

  • BLS through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required
  • Minimum Certified by the State of California to practice and administer radiation - Registered Radiologic Technologist CRT
  • Minimum Certified by the State of California to practice and administer – Fluoroscopy
  • Minimum Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ARRT certification

Experience:

(Required)

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible diagnostic radiology experience in an acute-care hospital.
  • Demonstrated expertise in trauma imaging, portable radiography, fluoroscopy, surgical imaging, and emergency department workflow.
  • Previous experience serving as a clinical preceptor, mentor, or departmental resource.

(Preferred)

  • Experience in a Level I Trauma Center or large academic medical center.
  • Experience participating in accreditation surveys, quality improvement initiatives, or imaging protocol development.
  • Leadership development or charge technologist experience.
