The Department of Radiation Oncology is dedicated to advancing the future of imaging and radiation therapy through innovative research focused on more precise, effective, and personalized cancer treatments. Research efforts emphasize improving clinical outcomes and expanding knowledge in emerging interdisciplinary areas, including cardio-oncology.
Position Summary
The Research Intern (Per Diem) will support clinical cancer outcomes research focused on the relationship between cancer therapies and cardiovascular health. Under physician-scientist mentorship, the intern will gain hands-on experience in clinical research methodologies, patient data collection, radiation oncology workflows, and scientific analysis within a leading academic healthcare environment.
This internship is designed to provide exposure to translational and clinical research while supporting the development of foundational research, analytical, and scientific communication skills.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct electronic medical record (EMR) chart reviews and collect clinical research data
- Extract and organize laboratory, imaging, cancer treatment, and cardiovascular risk factor data
- Learn radiation treatment planning concepts and radiation dose metrics
- Support research planning, data preparation, evaluation, and analysis activities
- Participate in literature reviews and background research
- Assist with preparation of data summaries, presentations, and research posters
- Attend weekly research meetings, academic seminars, and networking opportunities
- Contribute to independent and collaborative research projects with increasing responsibility over time
Learning Objectives
- Develop foundational knowledge of cardio-oncology and clinical cancer research

Training & Systems Exposure
Interns will receive training and supervised access to research and clinical systems, including:
- REDCap
- CS-Link
- Radiation oncology treatment planning systems
- Imaging and treatment data platforms
Training will also include electronic medical record navigation, protected health information (PHI) protocols, and healthcare research compliance standards.
Additional Information
- This role involves handling protected health information (PHI) in accordance with institutional policies and training requirements.
- All research activities involving patient data must be conducted on approved institutional systems and devices.
- This position does not involve laboratory specimen or sample handling.
