Job Title:         Special Education – Life Skills Aide                   Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Primary Purpose:

Assist teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements; work under supervision of certified teacher 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Associate degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment as required by the No Child Left Behind Act

Valid Texas educational aide certificate

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work with children with disabilities

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

 

Experience:

Two years’ experience working with children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

  1. Assist teacher in presenting instructional materials

 

2.   Help maintain neat and orderly classroom

Student Management

  1. Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups (i.e., reading tests, highlighting texts, reinforcing concepts, note taking

       assistance)

 

  1. Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom; this

       includes, but not limited to, lunchroom, bus, and job site

 

  1. Keep administrator informed of special needs or problems of individual students

 

 

 

  1. Work with students as job coach in conjunction with the VAC program

Other

  1. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance

 

  1. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned

 

  1. Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations

 

  1. Adhere to the district’s safety policies and procedures

 

  1. Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business

 

  1. Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students

      and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting)

 

  1. Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

 

  1. Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students

Posture: Frequent standing; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking and reaching

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning or students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases)

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

Salary : $21,000 - $30,055
