Position Summary

The House Supervisor reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and serves as the designated backup nursing leader in the absence of the CNO. This position provides clinical, administrative, and operational leadership to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of patient care throughout the facility. The House Supervisor coordinates hospital operations during assigned shifts and serves as a clinical resource for nursing staff, providers, patients, families. May assist with ancillary departments as directed by COO/CNO.

In addition to supervising daily nursing operations, this position is responsible for overseeing the facility's Utilization Review and Infection Prevention programs. The House Supervisor ensures appropriate utilization of healthcare resources, promotes evidence-based infection prevention practices, supports quality improvement initiatives, and maintains compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and organizational standards. The position collaborates with physicians, department leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to promote patient safety, operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and positive patient outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

House Supervision and Nursing Leadership

  • Provides clinical and administrative oversight of hospital operations during assigned shifts.
  • Serves as the administrative representative and backup nursing leader in the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer or other nursing leadership.
  • Reviews and assist with swing bed patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and patient placement to promote efficient patient flow and continuity of care.
  • Assists with staffing assignments, staffing shortages, scheduling adjustments, and allocation of nursing resources as needed.
  • Responds to emergencies, rapid responses, code situations, patient concerns, and staff concerns.
  • Provides clinical consultation, leadership, and decision-making support to nursing staff and other departments.
  • Monitors patient care activities to ensure compliance with nursing standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with conflict resolution involving patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Participates in incident investigations, risk management activities, and implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Communicates significant clinical or operational issues to the Chief Nursing Officer in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a backup to the Nurse Leader On-Call, providing leadership support and operational oversight as needed.
  • Assists with staff education, orientation, competency validation, and ongoing clinical education initiatives as assigned.
  • Participates in performance improvement, quality assurance, and regulatory readiness activities as assigned.

Utilization Review

  • Oversee the Utilization Review program to ensure appropriate level of care, medical necessity, and efficient utilization of healthcare resources.
  • Reviews admissions, continued stays, and patient care services for compliance with payer requirements and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborates with physicians, case management, nursing staff, and ancillary departments to facilitate appropriate treatment planning and discharge coordination.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve resource utilization while maintaining quality patient care.
  • Reviews clinical documentation to ensure accurate and complete support for reimbursement and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains utilization of review records, reports, and quality indicators.
  • Recommends process improvements to enhance efficiency, patient outcomes, and financial stewardship.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Oversee the organization's Infection Prevention and Control Program.
  • Conducts surveillance for healthcare-associated infections and monitors infection trends throughout the facility.
  • Investigates infection control concerns, outbreaks, and exposure incidents and implements appropriate interventions.
  • Develops, updates, and implements infection prevention policies and procedures consistent with current evidence-based practices.
  • Educates and mentors staff regarding infection prevention, isolation precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with providers, laboratory personnel, environmental services, and public health agencies to prevent and manage communicable diseases.
  • Ensures required reporting of communicable diseases and healthcare-associated infections in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains documentation and prepares reports for quality committees, leadership, and regulatory agencies.

Quality Improvement and Regulatory Compliance

  • Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities directed by the Quality Leader.
  • Monitors quality indicators and patient safety initiatives to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assists with regulatory surveys, accreditation inspections, and compliance audits.
  • Maintains knowledge of current healthcare regulations, standards of practice, and accreditation requirements.
  • Promotes a culture of patient safety, continuous improvement, and accountability.

Leadership and Professional Development

  • Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice and leadership.
  • Coaches, mentors, and supports nursing staff in the delivery of high-quality patient care.
  • Assists with staff orientation, competency assessments, and continuing education.
  • Promotes effective communication and collaboration among all departments.
  • Participates in policy development, procedure revisions, and organizational committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure

  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) required

Preferred Certifications

  • Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years of progressive clinical nursing experience.
  • Previous Charge Nurse, House Supervisor, or Nursing Leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with utilization review, quality improvement, infection prevention, or regulatory compliance is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing practice, patient care standards, and hospital operations.
  • Strong understanding of utilization review principles, reimbursement guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control standards, including CDC, CMS, OSHA, and accreditation requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records, Microsoft Office applications, and quality reporting systems.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, collaboration, and a positive work environment.
  • Flexibility to work in other departments, as needed

Working Conditions

This position is performed in a hospital environment with frequent exposure to infectious diseases, emergency situations, and varying patient care demands. The House Supervisor may be required to workdays, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts based on organizational needs.

Physical Requirements

The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting or assisting with patient movement in accordance with safe patient handling policies. The employee must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment and respond quickly to emergency situations throughout the facility.
