What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electronics Validation & Test Technician position at CDM Technology?
Senior Electronics Validation & Test Technician
Location: Onsite – Carlsbad, CA
Department: Electrical Systems Engineering
Reports to: Director of Electrical Systems
Role Summary:
We’re looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Senior Electronics Validation & Test Technician to support the electrical engineering team in the validation of new circuit boards and electronic systems for our solar electric vehicle platform. You’ll work closely with hardware engineers to bring up, test, and troubleshoot PCBs and subsystems—both individually on the bench and as part of integrated vehicle systems.
This role is perfect for someone who’s curious, systematic, and highly capable in a lab environment. You’ll be responsible for executing test plans, contributing to test development, and owning the physical setup of test benches, equipment, and software.
What You’ll Do:
- Set up circuit boards on the bench and safely power them up using lab power supplies, electronic loads, and battery simulators
- Execute hardware validation tests according to detailed test plans—or help write or refine those plans when needed
- Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, CAN tools, and other instrumentation to verify functionality and troubleshoot
- Interface with custom test software, Python scripts, or GUI-based tools to run embedded board-level tests
- Document test results, anomalies, and retests clearly and methodically
- Work with electrical and firmware engineers to root-cause board issues and capture findings
- Assist in designing or modifying test jigs, harnesses, and setups to improve testing speed and repeatability
- Maintain lab cleanliness, safety practices, and calibration standards for all equipment
What You Bring:
- Associate’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience (bachelor's degree a plus)
- 7-10 years' experience in an electronics lab environment testing PCBs or embedded systems
- Strong hands-on skills with oscilloscopes, function generators, lab power supplies, CAN analyzers, etc.
- Ability to read schematics and understand circuit function to perform meaningful testing and basic troubleshooting
- Familiarity with embedded systems and communication protocols (CAN, UART, I2C, SPI)
- Basic Python or scripting experience a plus (for running tests or automating steps)
- Ability to safely work with high-voltage and automotive systems (training provided)
- Strong attention to detail, documentation habits, and a desire to take ownership of tasks
Nice to Have:
- Automotive or EV experience (12V, HV systems, ECUs, CAN bus)
- Experience working with validation test plans (DV, PV, or custom plans)
- Experience creating or modifying test harnesses or breakout boards
- Familiarity with environmental testing (thermal chambers, vibration, etc.)
Salary : $120,000 - $140,000
