Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Fabrication Shop Foreman, this position will fabricate, modify, repair, and assemble various pieces of construction and industrial equipment in accordance with engineered drawings, hand sketches, and improvise to customers specifications. Compliance with AWS D1.1 regulations and the CDM Synergies Quality Assurance program is required. This position requires the ability to perform high-quality welding as well as custom fabrication, one-off projects, and repairs to existing weldments. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of solving fabrication challenges while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, welding symbols, and work instructions.
- Perform MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum as required.
- Fabricate new parts, assemblies, and structural components to specifications.
- Modify and repair existing weldments, equipment, machinery, and fabricated components to restore structural integrity and functionality.
- Perform custom fabrication and one-off jobs requiring layout, fitting, fabrication, and welding with minimal supervision.
- Analyze damaged or worn components and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Cut, grind, fit, bevel, and prepare materials for welding.
- Use fabrication equipment including saws, presses, ironworkers, drill presses, torches, plasma cutters, and grinders.
- Verify dimensions and quality of completed work using measuring and inspection tools.
- Perform fit-up and assembly of fabricated components before welding.
- Maintain weld quality that meets applicable AWS, customer, and company standards.
- Assist with troubleshooting fabrication and assembly issues.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety procedures and properly use required PPE.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of welding and fabrication experience preferred.
- Welding certification (AWS or equivalent) preferred but not required.
- Experience with structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and custom fabrication.
- Experience repairing existing weldments and performing field or shop repairs.
- Ability to work independently on custom, one-off fabrication projects from concept through completion.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read blueprints and welding symbols.
- Ability to safely operate fabrication and welding equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in MIG, TIG, FCAW, and Stick welding processes.
- Ability to fabricate from prints or verbal instructions.
- Skilled in modifying existing fabricated components to meet changing project requirements.
- Ability to identify defects and determine effective repair procedures.
- Strong layout, fitting, measuring, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely lift heavier materials with assistance or mechanical lifting equipment.
- Work in hot, noisy, dusty, and industrial environments.
- Ability to wear required PPE including welding helmet, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirator, and steel-toe boots.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
