As a Research Microbiologist you will: Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct, and lead basic and applied research studies in collaboration with the branch's epidemiology and other laboratory team while ensuring that scientific activities align with leadership priorities. Participate in the development of policy and educational documents and on review and advisory panels. Prepare findings for publication or presentation at scientific meetings. Coordinate national and international research programs and serves as a key advisor to scientists and officials in program offices both in the government and outside. Responsible for representing the agency; providing technical assistance to other scientists to facilitate collaborative experimentation and educational programs; training and directing technical personnel; reviewing documents; leading key agency scientific task forces and committees; delivering lectures; and conducting seminars nationwide. Serve as one of the Division's senior advisors in planning and coordinating methods development and applications projects in support of agency research programs dealing with respiratory diseases and issues Provide scientific consultative services to programs and projects that have demanding scientific problems or issues, consultant to state and local health departments and health officials in foreign countries regarding investigations, control, and prevention of respiratory and antimicrobial resistance problems. Develop and coordinate the sharing of national and international respiratory disease-related educational or informational material so that scientific advice and assistance is shared.

Basic Qualifications: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. or Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: Planning, prioritizing, directing, and leading research studies. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
