Managing Director – Head of Trust Services

The Managing Director – Head of Trust Services plays a critical role in the development of the National Trust Company and related strategy but also the leadership responsibilities and oversight for overall Cresset Trust operations. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in trust company strategy and operations as well as regulatory and compliance considerations.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic & Business Leadership

  • Define and execute the strategic vision for the Cresset Trust Company in alignment with the firm’s overall family office offering.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance and positioning, including working with state or national regulators, legal counsel, and internal stakeholders.
  • Identify and manage the build out of scalable trust products and services tailored for Cresset’s national client base to serve UHNW needs, family entities, multigenerational planning, and philanthropic structures.
  • Act as the executive lead for all trust-related governance, board reporting, and external regulatory communications.

Fiduciary and Risk Oversight

  • Ensure the Trust Company maintains the highest standards of fiduciary responsibility, ethics, and prudence across all client accounts.
  • Oversee all fiduciary governance, including discretionary decision-making, account administration, reporting, and other trustee responsibilities.
  • Manage the development and implementation of internal controls, risk management systems, fiduciary audit functions, and operating procedures in accordance with OCC/state and industry best practices.

Team & Culture Development

  • Attract, hire, and lead a high-caliber team of trust professionals, administrators, and compliance personnel.
  • Instill a service-driven culture that honors the legacy of fiduciary excellence while operating with a private client/family office lens.
  • Serve as a thought partner to Cresset’s broader advisor and wealth strategy teams in delivering integrated client solutions.

Operational Management

  • Own the design and implementation of trust accounting systems, document management tools, and IT solutions driving administrative workflows.
  • Ensure seamless integration between trust operations and Cresset’s advisors along with tax, wealth strategy, investment, and legal teams.
  • Manage vendor relationships and service-level commitments.

Client Engagement & Business Integration

  • Partner with advisors to deliver trust-based strategies aligned with clients’ estate plans, business succession, and family governance practices.
  • Provide executive-level fiduciary support for complex trust structures, cross-border issues, and family governance needs.
  • Lead client education and advisor enablement initiatives around the use and value of trust services.

Qualifications

Professional Background

  • 15 years of progressive leadership experience in fiduciary and trust services within a regulated trust company environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a trust charter (state or national) and interacting directly with regulatory agencies.
  • Proven ability to build or significantly scale a trust platform within a multifamily office, RIA, or private bank setting.
  • Deep knowledge of trust law, fiduciary principles, estate structures, and trust administration best practices.
  • Strategic thinker who is also hands-on, with the ability to balance vision with execution.

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (JD, MBA) strongly preferred.
  • Fiduciary credentials such as CTFA, CFP, TEP, or equivalent are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with UHNW and multigenerational family dynamics preferred.

Leadership & Values Alignment

  • Values-driven executive with a strong sense of personal and institutional integrity.
  • Confident decision-maker with deep regulatory literacy and commitment to prudent trust governance.
  • Client-first orientation, capable of working directly with families, attorneys, and advisors on complex personal and financial matters.
  • Entrepreneurial and collaborative, capable of operating in a high-touch, low-ego, fast-paced environment.
  • Skilled communicator who inspires trust and confidence with clients, colleagues, and partners.

What We Offer:

At Cresset, we focus on people first. As a service business, our people are our assets. Engaging our clients and employees is our highest priority. Starting base salary range: $275,000 - $350,000. Cresset offers a competitive compensation package including an annual incentive and a benefits package to all full-time employees including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, health savings accounts, short and long-term disability insurance, voluntary critical and accident insurance, and pre-tax parking and transportation programs.
