TEACHING ARTIST JOB DESCRIPTION
Contra Costa Civic Theatre Education (a division of Contra Costa Civic Theatre, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) is looking for passionate, kind, and experienced directors, choreographers, and music directors for our educational productions. Each semester, we put on full-scale musicals and/or plays with various age groups - in spring 2026, we will be putting on Frozen KIDS (Ages 7-12), Into the Woods Jr. (Ages 11-14), and the full-length Into the Woods (Ages 13-19). CCCT Education also includes technique classes in subjects such as improv, acting, playwriting, etc. Schedules vary per class, but generally fall in the after school range or weekends and are somewhere between 1-3 times per week for anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours per class, plus paid prep time as needed. All classes take place on site at Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito (about 5 minutes north of Berkeley). The general responsibilities and requirements of each position can be found below:
DIRECTORS:
Description: Directors are responsible for holding the overall process. This includes creating and executing a creative vision/blocking for the show, attending and contributing to production meetings, planning and executing rehearsals, communicating and collaborating with the creative and administrative teams, and teaching students beginning to advanced (depending on age level) acting and theatre skills. It is also essential to create and foster a supportive, fun, and collaborative environment for young actors.
Requirements:
- 3 years of theatre experience
- 1 year experience of working with children
- Classroom management skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Passion for collaboration
Desired Qualifications:
- Directing experience and knowledge
Rate: Starting at $33/hour for teaching as well as prep (weekly prep time allotted per class)
CHOREOGRAPHERS:
Description: The choreographer is responsible for creating and executing choreography for students, communicating and collaborating with the director and creative team, and classroom management.
Requirements:
- 3 years of dance experience
- 1 year experience of working with children
- Classroom management skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Theatre experience
Rate: Starting at $25/hour for teaching as well as prep (weekly prep time allotted per class)
MUSIC DIRECTORS:
Description: Music directors are responsible for teaching music to students and running music rehearsals. This includes plunking out vocal lines on the piano, creating recordings of vocal lines for students to practice with, identifying and working on any areas of music that need work, and introducing students to healthy voice and breath technique.
Requirements:
- Singing experience
- 5 years of music experience
- 1 year experience of working with children
- Classroom management skills
- The ability to plunk out parts on the piano
Desired Qualifications:
- Theatre experience
- Intermediate piano skills
Rate: Starting at $25/hour for teaching as well as prep (weekly prep time allotted per class)
