What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Life Insurance Underwriter position at CBS Brokerage?
Make an Impact at the Forefront of Life Insurance
CBS Brokerage is looking for an experienced Senior Life Insurance Underwriter who wants more than a traditional underwriting position.
This is a highly visible, influential role at the center of our advisor, carrier, sales, and advanced-planning relationships. You will help shape how complex life insurance cases are evaluated, positioned, negotiated, and placed. Your expertise will directly influence advisor confidence, client outcomes, placement strategy, and the continued growth of our team.
CBS Brokerage is growing quickly, and this position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful change in how underwriting supports financial advisors. You will not simply review cases after they arrive. You will help drive strategy from the beginning, guide the team through complex risks, and advocate for stronger outcomes in the carrier marketplace.
If you are ready to bring your underwriting expertise closer to the advisor, have a voice in the process, and help build the future of a growing insurance organization, we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
Lead Complex Risk Assessment and Case Strategy
- Evaluate medical, financial, occupational, avocational, and lifestyle information to assess insurability and underwriting risk.
- Interpret APS records, laboratory results, paramedical examinations, prescription histories, and digital health data.
- Develop strategic underwriting assessments and carrier-placement recommendations.
- Identify potential concerns early and help advisors position cases effectively before formal submission.
- Provide clear, decisive guidance on complex and impaired-risk cases.
Advocate and Negotiate With Carriers
- Conduct strategic informal underwriting inquiries.
- Match complex risks with appropriate carrier underwriting philosophies, niches, and product capabilities.
- Negotiate directly with carrier home-office underwriters.
- Advocate for improved classifications, reconsiderations, and competitive case outcomes.
- Build productive relationships with underwriting teams across the carrier marketplace.
Influence Advisors, Partners, and the Growing CBS Team
- Serve as a primary underwriting resource for financial advisors and internal Insurance Specialists.
- Consult on large-face-amount, estate-planning, premium-finance, executive-benefit, and business-insurance cases.
- Educate internal teams and external partners on underwriting trends, case positioning, and carrier practices.
- Help establish consistent underwriting standards and repeatable best practices.
- Bring new ideas to a growing team and help improve how complex cases move from opportunity to placement.
Required Qualifications.
Candidates must meet all three requirements:
- Five or more years of dedicated life insurance underwriting experience.
- Documented experience underwriting life insurance cases with death benefits of $10 million or more.
- At least one active professional designation from the following list:
- FALU
- ALMI
- CPU
- ACS
- FLMI
Preferred Experience
- Experience within both a carrier home office and a Brokerage General Agency.
- Advanced-market underwriting involving estate planning, wealth transfer, premium financing, executive benefits, key-person coverage, or buy-sell planning.
- Experience developing underwriting practices, training teammates, or improving case-placement processes.
- Established relationships with carrier underwriting departments.
- Experience interpreting complex APS records and medical histories.
- Success conducting informal inquiries and negotiating with carrier home offices.
- Knowledge of impaired-risk, occupational, avocational, and lifestyle underwriting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to manage multiple complex cases and competing deadlines.
- Confidence working directly with advisors, carrier underwriters, and senior internal partners.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Be visible: Your expertise will be relied upon by advisors, internal specialists, leadership, and carrier partners.
- Shape outcomes: You will influence cases before submission, not simply react to decisions after the fact.
- Make a change: You will help improve underwriting strategy, processes, education, and carrier engagement.
- Grow with the team: You will join an organization expanding its reach and building additional specialist capacity.
- Work on meaningful cases: You will support complex planning situations where strong underwriting can materially affect the client and advisor experience.
- Help move the industry forward: You will work where underwriting, advanced planning, advisor advocacy, and modern insurance distribution come together.
CBS’s current positioning centers on changing how insurance is delivered, using insurance as a planning tool, and providing underwriting advocacy through a scalable, planning-first model.
