General Summary:
A pipefitter installs, maintains, and repairs piping systems used for the conveyance of water, steam, gas, chemicals, and other liquids and gases. This position requires practical skills and knowledge of pipe installation techniques, blueprint reading, system layout, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Install, assemble, modify, and repair piping systems including steel, copper, PVC, and other materials using threaded, grooved, welded, or soldered connections.
- Performs or assists in the performance of layout, fabrication, installation, and repair of piping systems for compressed air, steam, chilled water, and utility services.
- Cuts, threads, bends, and fits pipe using hand and power tools, torches, and welding equipment as applicable.
- Inspects piping systems and components to identify leaks, corrosion, misalignment, or system failures and perform corrective actions.
- Performs preventative maintenance on piping systems, valves, fittings, and related equipment as assigned.
- Ability to perform most complex and unusual tasks of the craft without supervision.
- Maintains the general cleanliness and appearance of assigned spaces, complies with safety standards, assists others as part of the maintenance team as required, and performs other duties assigned according to personal qualifications.
- Mentor and train others to develop strong working relationships and best practices.
- Assists other trades and maintenance personnel as required and performs other duties assigned.
Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements
- Knowledge of pipefitting techniques, piping systems, valves, fittings, and equipment associated with industrial, commercial, or facility operations
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
- Experience with welding, brazing, soldering, or pipe threading preferred.
- Possess a broad understanding of facility operations and maintenance.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- High School Graduate; technical or trade school certificates in pipefitting, welding, or related field desired.
Work Environment:
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop, kneel for short periods, climb ladders and scaffolding, work in confined spaces, stand for long periods of time, and perform repetitive arm and hand movements.
- Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, and pressurized systems, but none to the point of being disagreeable. Work may involve moderate safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, burns, or bruises.
