International / Foreign Language Translator

Overview

The International / Foreign Language Translator is responsible for the accurate translation of written documents and forms for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This role involves a high level of linguistic proficiency and cultural sensitivity to produce translations that faithfully represent the original content in the target language

This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.

Responsibilities

• Translate immigration-related documents, applications, and forms pertaining to various case types within the Asylum Division, such as affirmative asylum applications, credible fear and reasonable fear screenings, safe third country agreements, and I-881 applications for Suspension of Deportation or Special Rule Cancellation of Removal.
• Translate documents for the Immigration and Refugee Adjudication Division (IRAD), including materials for at sea protection screenings and Naval Station Guantanamo Bay well-founded fear interviews.
• Ensure translated texts accurately convey the style, tone, and intent of the original documents, considering cultural and dialectal variations to produce documents appropriate for the target audience.
• Produce high-quality translations that are indistinguishable from native compositions in the target language, addressing complex concepts and terminology.
• The position is focused on translating written documents, with no requirement for spoken interpretation.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• United States Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
• Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
• Proficient in grammar with strong written communication skills in English and the target foreign language(s).
• Must achieve fluency certifications in English and the target foreign language(s) as per standards set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), or the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) within six months of security approval.
• Ability to Translate in one of the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Haitian Creole, Portugeuese, Mandarin, French, and Wolof.
• Ability to obtain Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Fitness Clearance
• Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.
• Must possess problem-solving skills.
• Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
• Ability to respond effectively to customers with a sense of urgency.
• Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.
• Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks at any one time.

Desired Qualifications:

• Advanced certifications or degrees in translation, linguistics, language studies, or related fields.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional translation experience.
• Proficiency with translation platforms such as MemoQ, Trados, etc.
• Ability to handle and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Cultural sensitivity during the translation process for both the original and target languages.

• Professional office environment.
• Work may be carried out in a professional office environment, USCIS offices, DHS facilities depending on the needs.
• Must be able to work at one of the following offices: Arlington, VA, HQASM, MD, Atlanta, GA, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Houston, TX, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, New Orleans, LA, Newark, NJ, New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, Tampa, FL.
• Must be available to be on-call as needed to accommodate potential job requests.
• Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
• Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.

Pay Range

Salary : $29
