Superintendent of Police – Cayuga Nation Police Department 

The Superintendent of Police is a sworn law enforcement officer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Cayuga Nation Police Department. The Superintendent sets the mission, leadership vision and core values that govern all work efforts within the agency. Together with the leadership team, the Superintendent sets goals and objectives, prioritizes and assigns work, authorizes policy, coordinates with external agencies, develops collaborative efforts and meets with public officials. The Superintendent serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the department and is responsible for aspects of department operations. The Superintendent of Police reports to the Nation Federal Representative and the Tribal Council. 

Who We Are

The Cayuga Nation Police Department is a tribal law enforcement agency established by the Nation’s sovereign government to protect its citizens, property, customers, and guests. The agency’s patrol area is a 64,015-acre federally recognized reservation spanning portions of Cayuga and Seneca Counties in Central New York State. Commercial enterprises operated by the Nation are visited by roughly one million patrons per year. Nation Police Officers conduct routine patrol and community policing duties. Nation Police Officers complete initial training, certification, and continuing education analogous to any other law enforcement agency in the United States.

Essential Duties 

These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary: 

  • Supervising staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting and reviewing performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; and making hiring, termination and disciplinary decisions. 
  • Responding to questions and concerns from supervisors, staff and the public. 
  • Responding to emergencies and deploying appropriate resources.
  • Assisting with developing and enforcing department policies and procedures. 
  • Preparing and reviewing police policies, procedures, records, inspections, press releases, security notices, and other documents. 
  • Coordinating and communicating public safety activities, trainings, changes to processes and procedures, with other Nation departments and enterprises, as well as with external agencies. 
  • Supervising and participating in special or sensitive investigations. 
  • Assisting with developing and administering the department budget. 
  • Ensuring compliance with Federal or state regulations, funding guidelines and laws.
  • Representing the Police Department to other agencies and the media. 
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to department employees. 
  • Conducting continuous recruitment activities to fill department vacancies.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Nation government. 

Training and Experience (required): 

  • Previous certification and at least fifteen years’ work experience as a competitively appointed police officer or federal law enforcement officer. 
  • Completion of a basic law enforcement academy for sworn law enforcement officers. 
  • Completion of advanced coursework in Police Supervision 
  • Experience as a lead investigator or detective 
  • At least ten years prior experience as a law enforcement supervisor or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. 
  • Undergraduate degree is required.


Licensing or Certification Requirements: 

  • Current state-issued Driver’s License 
  • New York State or other State-issued Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification as a Police Officer or certification as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer in a Criminal Investigative Role (i.e. 1811 Series Special Agent)
  • Must be a U. S. citizen 
  • Must have a clean criminal record 
  • Current New York State Pistol Permit (or ability to obtain before hiring)

  • Homeland security and organizational safety practices 
  • Conducting interviews and interrogations
  • Disciplinary procedures 
  • Collecting and handling evidence 
  • Defensive tactics 
  • Firearm usage and justification 
  • First aid principles 
  • De-escalation techniques; analyzing complex and volatile situations; resolving conflict; maintaining personal control in stressful situations 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Embracing change and innovation when indicated 

Physical Requirements: 

The successful candidate must be physician-certified for full and strenuous duty as a law enforcement officer.
