Cavalier Produce is a locally owned and operated wholesale distribution company for produce and specialty foods. For more than 25 years, the owners have created a fast-paced, friendly environment that is a great place to work.
Our business is growing, and we are accepting applications for HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER at our facility in Louisa, VA. Our hours of operation span over three (3) shifts and we are a Monday through Saturday operation. Note: not all positions will require flexibility to work all shifts.

The ideal candidate is responsible for managing the human resource function of the organization, including oversight of key HR areas such as onboarding, off-boarding, HR data maintenance, employee relations, benefits administration, recruiting, training, professional development, company culture and employee engagement, and support to leaders. Provides excellent customer service to our internal customers through effective communication, guidance around HR matters, and promoting cross-department collaboration. This position also helps to implement the CORE values that guide our daily activities within this organization. Position is required to be on-site five (5) days per week. Flexibility to be available to support varying shifts preferred.
Recruitment (~40%)
- Hiring - Manage the full-cycle recruiting and hiring processes, participate in interviewing candidates, assist in making hiring decisions, and manage onboarding of new employees.
- Long-Term Planning – Establishing a recruitment pipeline to fulfill staffing needs as defined by management and budgetary requirements. Note: During hiring surges, recruiting duties may exceed the estimated 40% of the duties.
- Branding - Develop marketing plan and outreach program for recruitment including messaging, geographic area, employment events, and media outlets. Attract talent into our organization by internal and external sources.
- Compliance - Ensure full-cycle recruiting practices to ensure compliance and efficiency – first and second interviews, reference checks, background and/or drug testing, DISC Assessment, etc.
- Screening – Applications are screened against the qualification, knowledge, skills, abilities, interest and experience that is mentioned in the Job Defined Agreement (JDA).
- Cultural Alignment - Ensure potential candidates align with the company’s vision, mission, and core values.
- Management Support - Collaborate with department managers to ensure proper onboarding, introduction, and training of new staff members.
HR Operations and Administration (~30%)
- Policies - Support leadership in managing, creating, and implementing policies/regulations, which are mandatory for every employee and also have knowledge of its appropriate functioning.
- HR Data Integrity - Create and maintain HR database and all necessary personnel files. Monitor any changes in benefits, wages, bonus payments, vacation leaves and the termination of employees.
- Process Improvement - Support management of HR processes including performance management, policy reviews, handbook updates, employee onboarding and offboarding, etc.
- Payroll - Support Controller with reviewing payroll processes to ensure compliance with Federal, state, local and industry laws and standards, as well as ensuring deductions, reporting requirements and payroll practices are compliant. Work with Controller to reconcile and audit payroll records, deductions, etc.
- Benefits - Keep employees informed about their benefits, retirement accounts, and help to ensure benefit offerings remain competitive. Partner with Benefits Broker to manage overall benefits programs (including annual benefits review and adherence to ACA, COBRA and HIPAA requirements) and collaborate to recommend appropriate adjustments to benefit plans.
- Employee Communications - Support and oversee the communication between the owners and management team - keeping the lines of communication open and information flowing in a timely manner on operational matters; being proactive and forward-thinking with ideas for improvement, sharing ideas and providing, monitoring and enforcing operational and financial policies and procedures.
Relationship Management (~30%)
- HR Contact – Act as the main face of Human Resources onsite, providing support and guidance to employees and supervisors.
- Culture - Promote a positive work environment and collaborative staff relationships.
- Safety - Maintain a healthy, safe, and fun work environment for all employees to ensure a level of comfort amongst the employees and eliminate any stressful or awkward atmosphere that may hinder the performance of the staff.
- Have an open-door policy wherein employees can freely communicate and voice their opinions to be given consideration.
- Engagement - Build rapport with the employees to increase employee satisfaction and engagement.
- Management Support - Partner with managers to resolve employee conflicts in an unbiased and practical manner.
- Values - Build and maintain a good public image with the organization. Establish trust and confidence with staff as well as those external to the organization
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources and PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred, but not required;
- At least eight (8) years of experience supporting all faucets of the HR employee life-cycle;
- Previous experience with Paycom is required, including implementation and automation of HRIS;
- Desire to grow within the HR career path and eager to learn;
- Good written and verbal communications skills, including but not limited to, excellent grammar and spelling, usage of standard English, and a clear telephone speaking voice;
- Familiarity with human resource practices and payroll administration;
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local law by creating and maintaining all required documentation, including but not limited to worker’s compensation and OSHA-related files, documents, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all business and payroll/human resources matters and regularly confer with owners about these matters;
- Strong attention to detail and follow through for completion of tasks and projects;
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and prioritize appropriately based on deadlines and other factors;
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Work well independently and be productive with minimal supervision required;
- Good understanding and application of the concepts of discretion and confidentiality;
- Good customer service skills and enthusiasm for interacting with people.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening if offered a position.
