- Develop and provide support tailored to individual student needs as specified by the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students, parents and staff.
- Works with students in groups and/or on an individual basis in the solution of difficulties such as, home and family relations, health, emotional growth and stability, character education and improvement of social skills.
- Acts as the student advocate in the school environment with the school committee on special education, home school, host school and BOCES staff and administration.
- Serves as liaison with various outside agencies, such as social, legal and mental health to gain and provide information or initiate referrals as necessary.
- Works collaboratively with all of the component school districts.
- Acts as a collaborative partner with the classroom teacher by assisting in behavioral planning to maximize educational opportunities and maintain the student in the least restrictive environment. This may be accomplished through classroom observation, contingency management, conferencing and providing strategies, resources and information.
- Confers with parents as required to obtain relevant information, provide resources and strategies to ensure support of the student's IEP objectives.
- Provides career guidance and counseling; helps students evaluate career interests and choices. Disseminates information regarding vocational education and career opportunities.
- May plan guidance field trips to schools, colleges and industry for interested student.
- Assists and supports the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications, student portfolios, and resumes.
- Work in conjunction with administration to schedule, order and administer NYS regents exams.
- Provides student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on school records.
- Maintains student records and reports and protects confidentiality.
- Responsible for official student transcripts.
- In conjunction with administration, help to develop the master schedule.
- Performs related tasks as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor, the Building Principal, and/or the School Superintendent.
