Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Blue Ribbon Catholic School in Upper Montclair seeks a part time Social Studies Teacher with expertise in grades 6 through 8. Key Responsibilities

Social Studies Instruction and Curriculum

• Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, age-appropriate Social Studies lessons aligned with the school's established curriculum and New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
• Teach middle school Social Studies, including American history, world history, geography, government, and civics, as appropriate to each grade level.
• Encourage students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, research, and effective communication skills.
• Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, including class discussions, collaborative learning, primary-source analysis, projects, and technology-based activities.
• Differentiate instruction to accommodate students with varying academic abilities, learning styles, and individual learning needs.

Classroom Management and Student Development

• Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, well-organized, and academically focused classroom environment.
• Set clear expectations for student behavior, participation, academic performance, and personal responsibility.
• Encourage students to appreciate diverse cultures, historical perspectives, and the responsibilities of citizenship.
• Foster curiosity, independent thinking, and respectful discussion of historical, contemporary, and faith-related issues.
• Promote an atmosphere of kindness, mutual respect, and personal accountability consistent with Catholic values.

Assessment and Communication

• Develop and administer appropriate assessments, including quizzes, tests, written assignments, projects, and presentations.
• Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback.
• Maintain accurate records of student achievement, attendance, and classroom performance.
• Communicate professionally and effectively with parents regarding student progress and academic concerns.
• Collaborate with school administration and fellow faculty members to support student achievement and maintain curriculum consistency.

Professional Responsibilities

• Submit lesson plans and maintain instructional records in accordance with school expectations.
• Follow all school policies and procedures, including those related to student supervision, safety, and professional conduct.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, and school activities as required by the part-time position.
• Support the Catholic identity, educational philosophy, and mission of St. Cassian School.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in History or Social Studies Education or a closely related field.
• Strong knowledge of middle school Social Studies content and effective instructional practices.
• Knowledge of Catholic teachings and a commitment to supporting the faith formation of students.
• Excellent classroom management, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to engage middle school students and establish positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Willingness and ability to teach Religion in accordance with the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church.

Preferred

• New Jersey teaching certification in Social Studies or Elementary Education with appropriate middle school qualifications.
• Previous teaching experience at the middle school level.
• Familiarity with differentiated instruction and educational technology.

Schedule and Employment Expectations

This is a part-time teaching position approximately covering 20 to 22 instructional hours weekly determined by the school's academic schedule. The teacher will be responsible for teaching assigned Social Studies classes in 6th through 8th grade and fulfilling all associated planning, assessment, communication, and professional responsibilities.
