Summary:
The Immediate Treatment Monitor Assistant (ITMA) observes the cardiac monitors, properly documents and reports appropriate changes in cardiac rhythm or heart rate to the primary nurse or charge nurse. The ITMA additionally assists patients with activities of daily living, provides care to acutely ill patients and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Maintains nursing unit's organization and flow through performance of clerical support functions.

EDUCATION
For successful completion of this course, participants are required to achieve a minimum score of 80% on the cardiac rhythm interpretation exam.

Responsibilities:
EDUCATION
- High school graduate
- Phlebotomy/glucometry competency within 90 days of hire/transfer
- BLS within three (3) months of hire/transfer
- Completion of the Basic Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation series within two (2) months of hire/transfer
For successful completion of this course, participants are required to achieve a minimum score of 80% on the cardiac rhythm interpretation exam.
- A score of 80% is required for successful completion of the course. This course is a pre-requisite for being able to independently function as an ITMA.
- Participants who do not achieve an 80% or higher on their first attempt will be re-assigned an alternate assessment to be completed and proctored by Clinical Education within 7 business days of the in-class assessment review.
- If a participant is unsuccessful on the re-attempt, then an individual education plan will be made with the unit manager, and Clinical Education which may include re-enrollment in the Basic Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation series.
- The Basic Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation series may be attended a maximum of two times. The ITMA must achieve an 80% or higher on their third attempt at the cardiac rhythm assessment.
- If scoring below an 80% after three separate attempts at the cardiac rhythm assessment, the ITA is no longer eligible to independently function as a telemetry technician/ITA and the manager and site leadership will be notified.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of one (1) year as an ITA (Immediate Treatment Assistant) at Catholic Health or one (1) year emergency room acute care experience within the past three (3) years.
- Previous monitor tech experience or experience reading cardiac rhythms preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Computer literate, ability to utilize EPIC
- Ability to read with comprehension
- Desire and skill to meet the needs of the patient in the acute care setting
- Continuous awareness of need for safety measures in patient care
- Assist other hospital staff in direct patient care
- Successfully pass written examination following training basic cardiac rhythm course
- Able to sit long periods concentrating on monitors regardless of environmental activity and surroundings
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritize
