The employee in this position provides support to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend in its mission to serve all in need as Christ calls us to do, particularly the mental health needs of the people of the parishes of the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend. Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM) is established in the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend to accompany those with mental health needs in our parish and school communities in a Catholic, sustainable, ethical, and meaningful way. The focus of this ministry is education, accompaniment, and advocacy. The Program Manager works alongside the Director of Diocesan Mental Health Ministries in this mission.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supports the development and implementation of CMHM in the parishes within the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend which supports the needs of the Diocese
  • In collaboration with the Diocesan Director of Mental Health Ministries, the Program Manager develops and maintains the Mental Health Ministry Network consisting of ministry leaders in the parishes who are trained and can be quickly identified by those seeking accompaniment
  • Collaborates with diocesan and Catholic Charities offices, clergy and parish staff, to develop training and formation opportunities, spiritual accompaniment opportunities, and advocacy and referral opportunities for clergy, religious, and laity to walk alongside and support parish communities
  • This job requires a person to become a Mental Health First Aid Certified Trainer
  • Develops and maintains a database of mental health educational resources and local referral network for professional support
  • Provides administrative support to the Diocesan Director of Mental Health Ministries and other staff members as needed. This includes managing correspondence with parish ministry teams, diocesan offices, coordinating meetings, and maintaining accurate records
  • Responds to inquiries related to Mental Health Ministry. Answer phone calls and emails, respond to inquiries promptly, and redirect communications as appropriate.
  • Maintain and update databases, spreadsheets, and other documents related to mental health programs, events, and participants. Ensure data accuracy and confidentiality at all times.
    • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of mental health workshops and retreats. This includes managing logistics, collaborating with parish staff and volunteers, coordinating with the Catholic Charities marketing team, and providing on-site support during events.
    • Communicates effectively with clergy, religious, parishes, and other diocesan and Catholic Charities departments as well as other mental health community partners to implement CMHM
    • In collaboration with the Director of Diocesan Mental Health Ministries, participate in the Diocesan Mental Health Advisory Board that consists of individuals working in the mental health field and in the diocese to provide guidance, advice and assistance in strategic planning of Diocesan Mental Health Ministries
    • Manages projects related to mental health as requested by the Director of Diocesan Mental Health Ministries
    • Effectively supports and carries out all policies and procedures, as well as decisions made by the agency’s leadership and function as a positive and supportive member of the agency’s team.
    • Demonstrate the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
    • Perform duties according to the 1) ethical and professional standards and policies of Catholic Charities; 2) ethics of chosen field of study; 3) values and tenets of Catholic Social Teaching.
  • Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree, strongly preferred in a related field (e.g., counseling, psychology, social work, nursing, theology, etc.)
    • Active practicing Catholic, able to articulate understanding of the Catholic faith and to serve as a committed witness to its mission
    • Experience working in a professional office environment or other professional setting is strongly preferred
    • Ability to successfully complete the Mental Health Ministry Training and Mental Health First Aid Training Certification
    • Sensitivity to the issues surrounding mental health and a commitment to supporting Catholic Charities’ mission
    • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed (e.g., at times before 8:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m.) and travel within the Diocese as required
    • Maintain strict confidentiality of Diocesan Mental Health Ministry teams
  • Skills:

    • Strong organizational skills, both written and verbal, with a professional and courteous demeanor
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
    • Attention to detail and accuracy
    • Comfortability and confidence to teach Mental Health First Aid to parish communities
    • Ability to work independently and effectively to provide services with limited supervision
  • Conditions Of Employment:

    • Have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
    • Reliable vehicle with personal vehicle liability insurance coverage
    • Successful completion of federal and state background checks
    • Successful completion of child welfare screening
    • Successful completion of drug and Mantoux (TB) screens
    • Comply with the agency’s mission, code of ethics, Catholic Social Teaching, policies and procedures, and confidentiality

    • Physical strength: must have ability to lift, push/pull, and hold/carry 25 lbs.
