Position Description:
The Pantry Assistant plays a key role in welcoming clients during the intake process, ensuring they are registered per Ministry standards. This position supports pantry operations by helping to process food donations for client distribution, keeping shelves stocked and orderly.
Position Responsibilities:
- Support the front desk with client check in, registration.
- In alignment with agency standards - manage the confidentiality and accuracy of client data entry into database system during distribution
- In alignment with the Office of Volunteer/Ministry standards respond to volunteer inquiries and guide them on registration process; correspond and supervise volunteers as needed. Attend volunteer events as needed.
- Email pantry updates to volunteers as required; post client announcements on the front door and inside lobby area.
- Update client resource bulletin board with required information and resources
- Assist in receiving, unloading, storing, packing, and distributing food to meet mission objectives.
- In alignment with Ministry safety standards, ensure food handling policies and procedures are followed.
- Support mobile food distributions and grocery store donation pickups throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont using pantry vehicles. Safely drive fleet of vehicles as required.
- Willing to uphold Catholic social teaching in the workplace
- In alignment with Ministry standards, maintain and operate food equipment (pallet jacks, hand trucks, platform trucks) and the cleanliness of the pantry.
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license, have a good driving record, and have at least three years of U.S. driving experience.
- Ability to learn new tasks and procedures, comply with processes, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow.
- Per Agency standard safely operate equipment, such as manual pallet jacks, etc.
- Fluency in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel and other relevant software.
- Effective customer service, communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and adjust as needed to workload and pantry activity priorities.
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree preferred.
- Experience in customer service and collaborating with volunteers.
- SERV Safe Food Safety Training, and CPR/AED certifications required within 90 days of employment at Catholic Charities expense.
- The employee is required to lift to 40 pounds from a standing position. Must also be able to use such items as hand trucks, dollies, carts, and pallet jacks.
- Must be able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to use a computer keyboard and handle heavy boxes and pallets of food; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and climb a ladder.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
