The Controller is responsible for supporting the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Diocese of Fairbanks. This position is responsible for overseeing accounting operations, managing financial reporting processes, and implementing best practices to ensure compliance and efficiency, under the oversight of the CFO. This position includes oversight of cash receipts and donations processing, and the Catholic Trust of Northern Alaska (CTNA). The Controller performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks.

Essential Functions
- Oversees the compilation and accuracy of Diocesan records while maintaining strict confidentiality and operating in accordance with Diocesan policies and procedures and applicable laws regarding security.
- Maintains the transaction recording process by program, then compares costs incurred to budget. Analyzes performance of cost centers.
- Provides exemplary customer service to employees, vendors, and others who contact the Accounting and Finance department by phone, email, or in person, directing them to the appropriate parties, answering basic questions on Diocesan policies and procedures, or documenting their concerns for escalation to the CFO.
- Assists with the annual budgeting process, including program budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Assists in preparation of the annual audit; prepares and maintains schedules as needed. In collaboration with the CFO, evaluates financial policies and practices of the diocese to ensure that financial goals and objectives are met in accordance with canon law, Diocesan policies, and government regulations.
- Reconciles integrated accounts between accounting and donor software.
- Is familiar with all donations processing procedures and operations, provides guidance as needed to Donations Processing Clerks.
- Prepares quarterly parish/entity billings for the property and casualty, liability, auto, and worker’s compensation insurance in accordance with the annual endorsements and prepares the appropriate journal entries.
- Prepares quarterly reports for all programs and distributes to program leaders.
- Reviews custodial accounts monthly for clearing.
- Maintains the fixed asset and depreciation schedule.
- Prepares quarterly accounting for the Catholic Trust of Northern Alaska. Reconciles bank and investment accounts; makes transfers as requested by depositors.
- Works with parish bookkeepers/administrators to assist in maintaining proper internal controls and bookkeeping practices.
- Oversees parish bookkeeping for the parishes with which the Diocese is contracted for bookkeeping services.
- Attends CTNA, Finance Council, and any other diocesan or parish meetings as requested.
- Assists with all tasks assigned by Senior Leadership with confidentiality and discretion, demonstrating excellent internal and external customer service.

Education and Experience
- Minimum: Associate’s degree in accounting with three years’ work experience or ten years of equivalent accounting work experience.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, mathematics or related field with a minimum of five years’ experience in the field, CPA designation.
- Experience in a Roman Catholic environment preferred.
