Lead Middleware Engineer
Washington, DC - Fully On-Site (Federal Facility)

Job Description
We're seeking a Lead Middleware Engineer to provide infrastructure support for federal web application solutions. This senior-level role focuses on supporting middleware infrastructure, troubleshooting incidents, managing risk, and optimizing performance across diverse platforms including Apache Tomcat, WebLogic, Oracle SOA, IIS, and JBOSS. You'll work full-time on-site at a federal facility in Washington, DC with later shift coverage ending between 5-7 PM daily.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Support existing middleware infrastructure, troubleshoot incidents and outages, and manage risk across enterprise environments
• Serve as escalation point for complex middleware issues, providing guidance for resolution of production and application problems
• Collaborate with application teams to troubleshoot and resolve application outage issues
• Serve as subject matter expert proposing architectural improvements and streamlining middleware processes
• Monitor OEM middleware patching and upgrade recommendations, implementing updates per lifecycle protocols
• Execute maintenance processes including load balancing, performance tuning, and configuration management
• Execute system-level changes including initialization parameters associated with underlying infrastructure
• Maintain consistent middleware parameters and system settings across all production instances
• Implement and administer middleware management tools across multiple instances
• Provide hosting operations and engineering support for web middleware application components
• Integrate middleware with Microsoft IIS, Apache Tomcat, Apache HTTPS web servers
• Manage database-middleware integration with Oracle and SQL databases
• Support cloud integration with AWS and Azure platforms
• Perform root cause analysis, risk identification, and risk mitigation for incidents
• Lead research, analysis, and develop recommendations for middleware tech refresh initiatives
• Maintain environmental documentation, standard operating procedures, and engineering documentation
• Provide training and knowledge transfer as required
• Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation every 2-3 months
Required Experience/Skills
• Minimum 8 years providing middleware engineering support including architectural design, proof of concept development, and documentation
• Expertise with Apache Tomcat, WebLogic, Oracle Application Server, Oracle SOA Suite
• Experience with PHP, Python, IBM InfoSphere, Node.js, Microsoft .NET Framework, Microsoft IIS, RedHat JBOSS
• Strong web server-middleware integration expertise (Microsoft IIS, Apache Tomcat, Apache HTTPS)
• Database-middleware integration experience with Oracle and SQL databases
• Cloud integration expertise with AWS and Azure platforms
• Understanding of server administration elements related to middleware applications
• Strong experience leading tech refresh research, analysis, and developing recommendations
• Experience implementing and managing middleware management tools across multiple instances
• Proven root cause analysis, risk identification, and risk mitigation capabilities
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
• Demonstrated experience in fast-paced ITSM support environments
• U.S. citizenship required
• Must possess or obtain Public Trust clearance before start date
• Availability for later shift coverage (ending 5-7 PM daily)
• Willingness to participate in 24x7 on-call rotation every 2-3 months
Nice-to-Haves
• Understanding of STIG settings and server administration for middleware applications
• Knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, port mapping, routing, DNS masking)
• Experience with Oracle and SQL databases in physical and cloud environments
• Ability to configure middleware settings per Federal Guidelines including DISA STIGs
• Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 operating system experience
• VMware vSphere and Hyper-V virtualization experience
• Cold Fusion platform experience
• Docker containerization experience
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field with 8 years of relevant middleware engineering experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
