Position Title: CATS Transit Driver (Part-Time)

Salary: $14.76 per hour

Reports To: Transit Supervisor

General Statement of Duties
Performs routine work in the safe and efficient operation of a county transit vehicle to transport citizens to designated locations on assigned routes. Provides assistance to passengers as needed and ensures a safe, courteous, and reliable transportation experience.

Distinguishing Features of the Position
The Transit Driver operates county transit vehicles to transport elderly, disabled, and general-population passengers to and from medical appointments, county agencies, work sites, senior centers, and other approved destinations. Work includes performing pre- and post-trip inspections; assisting elderly and disabled passengers; operating wheelchair lifts; collecting required documentation; and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated for safety, customer service, and adherence to routes and schedules.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Drives assigned transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, departmental regulations, and established routes and schedules.

· Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles; documents vehicle condition and safety checks.

· Operates wheelchair lifts and assists passengers with boarding, exiting, and securing mobility devices.

· Maintains trip logs, mileage reports, fare documentation, and passenger records as required.

· Assists passengers safely, courteously, and respectfully, including elderly and disabled riders.

· Performs routine vehicle maintenance checks (fueling, oil levels, fluids, tire pressure, lights, wipers, etc.).

· Reports vehicle concerns, hazards, accidents, delays, or unusual incidents to the supervisor.

· Collects fares and records payments accurately (if applicable).

· Keeps vehicle clean and ensures sanitary and safe passenger environment.

· Communicates with dispatch and supervisor regarding route changes, delays, or passenger needs.

· Follows OSHA standards and county safety procedures.

· Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Knowledge of state and local traffic laws, including safe vehicle operation regulations.

· Familiarity with the geographical layout of Caswell County and surrounding areas.

· Ability to safely operate and maneuver transit vehicles under various conditions (including weather).

· Ability to follow assigned routes and schedules while adapting to situational changes.

· Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with passengers, staff, and the public.

· Understanding of safety procedures related to assisting elderly and disabled individuals.

· Ability to maintain accurate operational and passenger records.

· Ability to work early mornings, evenings, and flexible schedules as needed.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, and up to 20 pounds frequently. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, sitting, and repetitive motion. Must be able to assist passengers safely, including mobility assistance. Must possess sufficient visual and hearing acuity for safe vehicle operation.

Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED preferred. Experience driving passenger or transit vehicles preferred. Experience working with elderly or disabled populations preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required. Safe driving record required. Pre-employment drug test and criminal background check required. Must participate in random drug and alcohol testing per DOT/County policy (if applicable).

Work Schedule
Part-time hours; schedule may include early mornings, afternoons, and occasional special transports.

Pay: $14.76 per hour
