Summary of Job

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-A) provides high-quality, compassionate patient care for 911 calls and ground transports. This position requires a working knowledge of EMT skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, the public, peers, and supervisory personnel. The EMT must be able to communicate ideas, explanations, and recommendations clearly, both orally and in writing, and must possess the writing and spelling skills necessary for accurate completion of patient care reports and other required documentation. This role operates under the direction of the Emergency Medical Services Director and the Castle Rock Hospital District leadership team.

Essential Job Functions

• Provide high-quality, compassionate emergency medical care to patients during 911 calls and ground transports.
• Lift and carry medical equipment as necessary to deliver emergency care to patients.
• Lift, carry, push, and pull ill and/or injured patients, including operation of a stretcher.
• Climb stairs or uneven terrain to access patients and assist in removing them from the location found.
• Complete accurate and thorough patient care reports and all other required forms in a timely manner.
• Work independently with little direct supervision using strong time management skills.
• Interact with the public and co-workers under circumstances requiring specific knowledge, tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment.
• Maintain a high understanding of potential liability concerns related to patient care errors and quality control processes.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

General

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Works well under pressure with excellent customer service, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, the public, peers, and supervisory personnel.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Graduate of an accredited AEMT program required.

Licensure & Certifications

• Current Wyoming State AEMT certification or NRAEMT Certification with the ability to obtain Wyoming Certification by start date; or current AEMT certification from a reciprocal state if approved by the Medical Director of CRHD Ambulance.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license (minimum equivalent to a Wyoming Class "C" driver's license).
• Driver's motor vehicle record must meet requirements set forth in the Employee Handbook and the standards of CRHD's auto insurance provider.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification through the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or ASHI required.
• Must be able to pass a CRHD-approved physical agility test.

Experience & Skills

• Proficient in Microsoft Office products, WATRS, and other Windows and web-based applications.
• Excellent customer service, written, and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a high-performance EMS environment.
• Current NRAEMT Certification.
• Current American Heart Association, NAEMT EPC, or Handtevy Pediatric Certification.
• Current NAEMT PHTLS or ITLS Certification.
• Current NAEMT AMLS or approved CRHD equivalent.
• Completed FEMA courses ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position can be physically and emotionally demanding and requires the ability to multitask effectively in crisis and high-stress situations. The following conditions are representative of those encountered in this role:

• May require working in adverse weather conditions including extreme temperatures, wet conditions, wind, snow, and ice.
• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens is a risk; appropriate precautions and PPE must be followed.
• Requires sustained physical effort including standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 100 pounds without assistance.
• Must be able to lift and carry medical equipment as necessary to deliver emergency care to patients.
• Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull ill and/or injured patients, including operation of a stretcher.

Must be able to climb stairs or uneven terrain to access patients and assist in removing them from the location found.
