PURPOSE OF POSITION: Registered Nurses provide professional nursing care services with emphasis on service to patients requiring care related to public health programs, perform professional nursing following prescribed rules, regulations, professional practices, and special orders from physicians; may supervise licensed practical nurses and/or home health aides, and perform related work as assigned by a public health nurse.
WORK PERFORMED/JOB FUNCTIONS: Assessment of the client’s individual needs and level of service required through coordination of linking people to needed personal health service providers, and ensuring the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable. Assessment of inmate's medical care needs including providing health assessment as required for clients with chronic health needs, Mantoux screening for tuberculosis; reviews, refills, and arranging for medication required within the correctional facility; responsible for disposal and destruction of unused medications; communication with and obtaining physician orders that affect inmate’s medical needs, arranging for medically necessary care outside of the correctional facility. Provide family planning services both in the office and at clinic sites. Teaching the client basic principles of healthy living by applying information from related fields such as nutrition, dental hygiene, and safety. Works in collaboration with the school district to conduct health screenings for 3-4-year-olds across the county. Provide leadership for public health preparedness activities in the community by developing and maintaining relationships with partners at the local, regional, and state levels. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice, with the ability to apply nursing techniques. Knowledge of medicines and narcotics. Ability to assess nursing needs and implement nursing care plans. Ability to administer skillfully medically ordered medications and treatment. Ability to effectively deal with the public. Ability to establish effective relations with physicians, patients, and co-workers.
MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, OR CERTIFICATIONS: At a minimum, should have a high school degree or its equivalent, plus specialized knowledge gained through a Diploma or Associate Degree in nursing (no related field allowed) from an accredited college, and successfully pass the State Board of Examinations for Registered Nurse license. Additionally, must maintain a current Registered Nurse License in Minnesota and CPR Certification. A bachelor’s degree in nursing with Certification or eligibility for certification, within 6 months of hire, as a Public Health Nurse in Minnesota, is preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Sedentary to light physical activities requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, and close vision. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 35 pounds.
HOURLY RANGE: $36.37 - $46.67
