POSITION OBJECTIVE

Custodial Services strives to provide high quality, customer service-oriented cleaning services to the university community. Building service workers provide routine and special cleaning services in campus buildings and residence halls, including restrooms, bathrooms, offices, and public areas. The nature and frequency of general cleaning and bio-hazardous clean-ups performed according to Custodial Services' Quality Control Program.

Essential Functions

  • Empty wastebaskets and recycling containers per procedures. Carry trash outside to pick-up locations According to the assigned schedule. (10%)
  • Spot clean walls, doors, partitions, switch plates, etc. Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, wax, and spray buff floors. Vacuum, spot clean, and shampoo carpeting. Clean white board in all common areas and study rooms. (20%)
  • Dust all surfaces including desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, windowsills (secure windows if open), bookshelves, bookcases, walls, blinds, ceilings, and light fixtures. Clean interior glass and all types of furniture. (10%)
  • Clean and disinfect restroom fixtures, clean mirrors, mop bathroom floors daily, and do showers, complete cleaning. Disinfect shower curtain. Police shower daily. Clean drinking fountains. (15%)
  • Replenish all restroom supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels and soap. Request supplies in reasonable quantities, to avoid shortages and overstocking. Check stairwells daily. Clean handrails, door handles, and push bars. Sweep and mop stairwells. (20%)
  • Perform bio-hazard cleanup using authorized bio-hazard spill kits and procedures campus wide inside campus buildings or outside on campus grounds, excluding parking lots and garages. This includes all bodily fluids that need to be treated as infectious hazards (blood, stool, vomit, urine, semen, and vaginal secretions). (10%)


Nonessential Functions

  • Follow university safety procedures; use appropriate safety gear; use caution when mixing chemicals and operating electrical equipment; immediately report any accidents and injuries to supervisor. Within assigned buildings, ensure that the university's recycling programs are carried out. Identify areas where building occupants are not properly recycling and report it to the supervisor. (5%)
  • Keep track of all equipment assigned to building. Ensure that equipment is maintained in proper condition, and promptly turn equipment in for repair when needed. Assist coworkers in other areas and buildings when necessary; assist security and maintenance staff during emergencies. Recognize when assistance, training, and direction are needed so that work objectives are accomplished in a safe, complete, efficient, and timely manner. Alert the supervisor to these situations and assist as needed. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, lock doors and secure all windows. (5%)
  • During the course of the daily work shift, report any quality control issues or problems identified in the building to the supervisor, and if possible, make appropriate recommendations to solve the matter. Communicate daily with supervisor to report achievements, progress, and problems. Actively seek out and suggest improvements to operations. Keep assigned custodial closets clean and neat. Identify and promptly report problems requiring Security or Maintenance assistance to supervisor. Cooperate with Security at all times and assist as needed in emergencies. (4%)
  • Responsible for keys; sign in and out key rings before and after shift. (1%)


Requirements

Experience: 3 years of cleaning experience in the commercial cleaning field, preferably in a large institution or hospitality environment. Experienced in bio-hazard clean ups or be trained in the proper procedures.

Education/Licensing: High school education required.

Required Skills

  • Be able to read (follow instructions), speak, and understand English.
  • Must be familiar with the proper use of cleaning tools, supplies and safety equipment
  • Must be trained in the proper procedures of using a bio-hazard spill kit for the cleaning up and disposing of biohazardous materials
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have technical cleaning expertise, excellent performance, and good attendance.
  • Must be familiar with green cleaning techniques and materials.
  • As a member of a CWRU service department, must be sensitive to the needs and programs of faculty, student, staff and visitors to the university.
  • Must be able to work shifts at times; must be able to work on emergencies.
  • Technical proficiency with commercial cleaning techniques, chemicals, supplies and equipment is essential.
  • Must understand university methods for hard floor maintenance, carpet cleaning, general cleaning, and project work.
  • Must be able to recognize cleaning problems and either recommend appropriate solutions or ask for guidance.
  • Must be familiar with hazards typical to the institution (radioactivity, asbestos, chemicals, etc.) and related safety equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customer face to face.


WORKING CONDITIONS

The employee will be exposed to commercial cleaning chemicals, bio-hazard spill kits. Be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The job duties require the clean- up of infectious bodily fluids. Working around research involving hazardous materials (radioactive, biohazardous and chemicals) that is conducted in many campus buildings. Work requires walking outdoors between buildings and may include noisy, hot, cold, wet, dusty or dirty environments. Must have the required Hepatitis-B inoculations. Other immunizations may be required in the future, depending on regulatory requirements. The working environment is an extraordinary environment with occasional exposure to potential biological hazards. Typical shifts are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., or assigned shift. Overtime and emergency hours may be required. The university is a non-smoking environment. This position is not eligible for the staff hybrid work program
