Position Overview

ATTENTION CANDIDATES:

We are hiring for TWO Academic Advisor positions through this one job listing: A Guided Pathways Specialist and a Running Start Specialist. All candidates will be considered for both positions, though if you have a preference, please specify accordingly in your cover letter.

The Guided Pathways Specialist is a temporary project position until June 2024.

The Running Start Specialist is a permanent position.

Under the direction of the Director for Student Advising and Support Services, the Academic Advisor - Guided Pathways Specialist will, in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Pathways, Outcomes and Assessment, support Cascadia's implementation of Guided Pathways. The Academic Advisor will also support the general advising needs of the department by providing educational planning, career and transfer exploration and academic success support for students enrolled in Cascadia's transfer programs. The Academic Advisor will apply equity-focused and transformational advising practices that provide accessible, equitable and superior educational experiences to every person to achieve their educational and career goals. The advisor will deliver services to individual and group settings via in person, by telephone, email or virtual settings.

Under the direction of the Director for Student Advising and Support Services, the Academic Advisor - Running Start Specialist will guide and oversee Cascadia's Running Start program serving as the primary contact for eligible students and high school counselors, support the Program Coordinator with monthly reporting, ensuring compliance with state and college policies, develop policies and procedures that support student success for program participants and promote Cascadia's Running Start Program with partner school districts. The position will also support the general advising needs of the department by providing educational planning, career and transfer exploration and academic success support for students enrolled in Cascadia's transfer programs. The Academic Advisor will apply equity-focused and transformational advising practices that provide accessible, equitable and superior educational experiences to every person to achieve their educational and career goals. The advisor will deliver services to individual and group settings via in person, by telephone, email or virtual settings.

As Academic Advisors, it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.

Employee Type: Full Time Exempt; Running Start: Permanent. Guided Pathways: Temporary Project.

Initial Salary: $68,097.54 (includes 5% King County Premium Pay)

Supervising Position: Director of Student Advising and Support Services
Essential Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Both Positions

General Transfer Student Advising
    • Assist students with course selection and promoting academic progress
    • Assist students with short-term and long-term planning, major, transfer and career exploration
    • Assist students with course prerequisites
    • Interpret test scores and unofficial transcripts and assign appropriate equivalencies
    • Deliver individual and/or group advising in person, by telephone, email or video conference settings
    • Apply equity focused and transformational advising practices to promote support accessible, equitable and superior education experience for all students
    • Promote student success
    • Connect students to on-campus and off-campus resources
    • Design and deliver materials (e.g. handouts, webpages, etc.) and presentations related to advising department goals

Committees/Meetings
    • Participate in advising-related and campus wide meetings, committees and trainings at the request of the Director of Student Advising and Student Support
    • Attend/participate in professional development and professional organizations for the purposes of remaining current in the field
    • Attend and participate in statewide Advisory Groups

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Guided Pathways Specialist

Guided Pathways
  • Assist with implementation of Guided Pathways, such as the program map review process, and revamp of the student onboarding process
  • Participate in assigned Guided Pathways workgroups
  • Research promising practices within advising to support students
  • Develop Guided Pathways related materials to support students
  • Develop communication to key stakeholders (students, advisors, faculty, and Areas of Interest leads)

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Running Start Specialist

Running Start Program Administration
  • Manage daily operations of program
  • Act as liaison with school districts and promote professional cooperation with counselors, registrars and administrators in reference to Running Start policies, procedures, course equivalencies, academic standing, enrollment levels, student success issues and student's ability to benefit from the Running Start Program
  • Manage recruitment for the Running Start program
  • Prepare and conduct Running Start information sessions
  • Determine the eligibility for Running Start students to register each quarter
  • Maintain and update on a quarterly basis web page content, program information sheets and student release forms for the Running Start Program
  • Monitor academic success of Running Start students and initiate interventions (including referrals) as appropriate
  • Supervise the sending of monthly enrollment reports to high school and district offices for billing/reimbursement purposes; troubleshoot billing discrepancies
  • Support the Program Coordinator when absent responding to emails and phone calls and processing application and registration materials
  • Identify student needs and communicate with Cascadia administrators regarding scheduling of courses for Running Start Students

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications - Both Positions
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience working in student services at a postsecondary institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a multicultural workplace and educational environment

Preferred Qualifications - Both Positions
  • Master's degree in Student Development Administration, Education, Counseling or relevant field from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Two years of experience as an academic advisor, educational planner, career counselor or equivalent education and experience at a postsecondary institution
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing programs that promote retention and completion rates for historically marginalized and underserved student populations
  • Experience using technology in the delivery of student development and advising services (such as ctclink/PeopleSoft, EAB Navigate)
  • One year of experience working in student services at a community or technical college
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering relevant presentations to diverse audiences
  • Ability to successfully communicate (written and orally) in a language in addition to English

Additional Preferred Qualification - Running Start Specialist
  • One year of experience administering or advising a Running Start Program

Physical Work Environment

Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The College is currently in hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Full-time employees are expected to be on-campus at least three (3) days per week with the option to work remotely for the remainder of their working days. Employees will need to provide their own remote workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. During on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.

Positions in this class typically require operating a computer, communicating, observing, and repetitive motions.

This position involves exerting between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects, with or without reasonable accommodation.
