What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pipelayer/Lead – Underground Utilities position at Cascade Utilities Inc?
Overview
Cascade Utilities, Inc., a well-established civil utility contractor focused on site development and utilities—sewer, water, and storm systems, side sewers, short-plat development, and drainage improvements for residential and commercial customers across the region. The company is built on technical know-how, honest communication, and doing the underground work that makes projects succeed above ground.
The Pipelayer role is ideal for an experienced underground professional who is curious, detail-oriented, and enjoys solving layout and grade challenges while leading and mentoring laborers who want to grow. Our pipelayers are key to our “craft-led” crew culture: they are expected to think ahead, solve field problems, and mentor laborers/topmen rather than only “laying pipe.”
What you’ll do
Install underground utilities, including storm, sewer, and water, per plans, city standards, and project specifications on residential and commercial jobs.
Set and check grades, lay pipe, install bedding, and oversee backfill and compaction to ensure long-term performance and smooth inspections.
Work closely with operators, foremen, and project managers to sequence work efficiently and adapt in the field when site conditions or plans change.
Maintain trench safety, shoring, and access in line with OSHA requirements and good practices, and help coach less-experienced crew members on safe habits.
Organize materials, verify quantities, and coordinate with inspectors and owners’ reps to keep projects moving toward completion.
Who will do well in this role
You have 3–5 years of hands-on experience installing underground sewer, storm, and water systems and can confidently run the pipe side of a small crew.
You are naturally curious and like understanding the “why” behind plans, grades, and details—and you use that understanding to anticipate issues before they slow the job down.
You can read and interpret construction drawings, profiles, and city details, and you’re comfortable checking and adjusting grades in the field.
You enjoy coaching laborers—showing them how to work safely, move efficiently, and see the bigger picture of the job.
You are comfortable working outdoors year-round in PNW weather with 7:00 AM starts and the typical seasonal ups and downs of regional construction.
You have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record; a CDL is a plus as is experience operating excavation equipment(excavator, loader, dozer, skid-steer, etc) and can expand your responsibility and value to the crew.
