Duties
- Safely operate various types of buses, including school buses, paratransit vehicles, and commercial buses, following all traffic laws and vehicle codes.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety, mechanical soundness, and cleanliness before each route.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, providing excellent customer service and support as needed.
- Manage behavior and ensure safety for all passengers, especially children or individuals with special needs, using effective behavior management techniques.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to traffic changes, emergencies, or unexpected situations using defensive driving skills and emergency response procedures such as CPR and emergency stop protocols.
- Maintain accurate logs of trips, passenger counts, and safety checks; complete incident reports when necessary.
- Communicate clearly with dispatchers, passengers, and team members using strong communication skills; may include multilingual interactions to serve diverse communities.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in bus driving, commercial driving, or school bus operation; previous experience working with children or seniors is highly valued.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; specific certifications such as CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) preferred.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, defensive driving techniques, and emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting passengers or handling equipment safely.
- Basic mechanical knowledge of vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting is advantageous.
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse populations.
- Familiarity with school policies related to student transportation or childcare is beneficial.
- Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies with calmness and professionalism.
- Knowledge of behavior management strategies to ensure passenger safety and comfort during trips.
