Position Summary:
The Tugboat Mate plays a critical role in supporting vessel operations by assisting the Captain in the safe, efficient, and compliant navigation of tugboats. This position is responsible for supervising deck operations, supporting crew activities, and ensuring adherence to all safety and regulatory standards. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist the Captain with the safe operation and navigation of the vessel in harbor and coastal waters.
- Supervise deck crew and coordinate daily activities, including towing, docking, and barge handling.
- Stand watch and perform navigation duties as assigned.
- Monitor vessel systems and support routine maintenance, inspections, and safety checks.
- Ensure compliance with all U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations, company policies, and the Towing Safety Management System (TSMS).
- Participate in safety drills, inspections, and emergency response procedures.
- Maintain accurate logs and assist with required recordkeeping and reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Mate license appropriate for towing vessels (Mate of Towing or equivalent).
- Minimum 3 years of experience working aboard tugboats, or completion of the Carver Companies Mate Training Program.
- Strong knowledge of marine safety, navigation, and towing operations.
- Current TWIC card and Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and communicate clearly with crew and leadership.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience operating in New York Harbor or other high-traffic ports.
- Familiarity with barge operations, ship assist work, and harbor maneuvering techniques.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work extended shifts aboard vessels in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 75 pounds.
- Frequent climbing, balancing, and movement across vessel decks and ladders.
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed primarily aboard tugboats in marine environments.
- Exposure to outdoor elements, including changing weather conditions, noise, and vessel motion.
- Schedule may include rotational shifts, extended hours, and time away from home depending on operations.
- Strict adherence to safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
