I. EDUCATION:
A. High School Diploma/GED Equivalent
B. Successful completion of a state approved AEMT curriculum and a current license from the state of Tennessee as an AEMT
II. EXPERIENCE:
A. One-year experience preferred but not required
B. Valid Tennessee vehicle operator's license with appropriate F-endorsements
C. The individual must be at least 18 years of age
III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Under the supervision of the Division supervisor, performs the following tasks:
Communicates verbally via telephone and radio equipment.
Can lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance).
Interprets written, oral and diagnostic from instructions.
Uses good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations.
Calculates weight & volume ratios.
Can read manuals, encyclopedias, road maps, and can accurately discern street signs and address numbers.
Interviews patient, family members, and by-standers.
Documents in writing, all relevant information in a prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such. Documentation must be legible and error-free.
Converses with co-workers and hospital staff as to the status of a patient.
Displays manual dexterity, with ability to perform all tasks related to highest quality patient care.
Is able to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain.
Can withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture.
Utilizes all AEMT-Basic skills and equipment and performs in accordance with all behavioral objectives in the DOT/AEMT curriculum and applicable State of Tennessee EMS Regulations.
Receives calls from dispatcher via telephone, radio, or in person; responds verbally to radio transmissions; reads maps; drives ambulance to call location using the most expeditious route and observes all traffic laws and organization policies. Works as a member of a two-person team.
Determines nature and extent of illness or injury, obtains vital signs using hands, visual, auditory, and smell senses with appropriate equipment; Establishes priorities for emergency care; renders care consistent with established standards of care, adopted standing orders and protocols, on-line physician direction, and applicable state EMS regulations.
Assists in lifting, carrying, and transporting patients to ambulance and on to medical facility. Reassures patients and bystanders, avoid mishandling patient and undue haste. Extricates patient from entrapment, assesses extent of injury, uses prescribed techniques and appliances, radios dispatcher for additional assistance or services, provides light rescue services as required.
Complies with laws in handling deceased, notifies authorities, and arranges protection of property and evidence at scene. Determines appropriate facility to which patient will be transported, reports nature and extent of injuries or illness to facility, asks for medical direction from receiving facility physician.
Observes patient enroot and administers care and treatment as necessary. Assists in moving the patient from the ambulance into the facility. Reports both verbally and in writing any observations made about the patient at the scene and enroot to the facility; any treatment and care given during transport; and aids facility staff as required.
Replaces supplies; checks all equipment for future readiness; maintains ambulance in operable condition; ensures ambulance cleanliness and orderliness of equipment and supplies; decontaminates vehicle interior; determines vehicle readiness by checking vehicle fluids and mechanical items; maintains familiarity with specialized equipment.
Performs job as established by organization policies and procedures; maintains licenses and certificates; participates in training and continuing education program; maintains stations, crew quarters, and building grounds as assigned; accepts schedule changes and works irregular shift patterns as requested; performs specialized tasks as requested by the management.
