POSITION SUMMARY:

Supervises the nutritional aspects of patient care. Provides nutrition education/counseling to both inpatients and outpatients. Coordinates clinical nutrition with food service operations for delivery of patient care. Prepares and oversees implementation al all therapeutic diets and approves the diet manual. Attests to the nutritional adequacy of all foods served. Additional services may include community group presentations, education and participation in health fairs. Review of electronic medical record may be done off site. Onsite service is required for outpatient consultations, nutrition staff meetings and occasionally as requested by clinical staff.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics or Nutrition from an accredited institution.

Other

  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics registration.

Licensure Required

  • State of Nevada Licensure.

Minimum Work Experience

Minimum 1-year healthcare experience preferred.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Collects and interprets nutritional data necessary to recommend, prescribe, or modify therapeutic diets as needed to meet the nutritional needs of patients:

  • Reviews patient's data for diagnosis, age, sex, height, weight, laboratory data, history, medications and other pertinent information.
  • Evaluates nutritional status of patients at nutritional risk and formulates individual care plans based on assessments.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare team members (medical staff, nursing, pharmacy, social workers, etc.) to plan and implement diet therapy as necessary in meeting the nutritional needs of patients. This is done either by phone or at times on site.
  • Evaluates data collected and completes nutritional consults/assessments as required following diet therapy standards.
    Ability to be available as needed, including weekends and holidays.

Ensures proper nutritional management of patients with specialized dietary needs or who are at moderate to high nutritional risk:

  • Accurately calculates and develops meal patterns for specific therapeutic diets as appropriate.
  • Accurately modifies menus for patients with specialized dietary needs or complex diet prescriptions.
  • Monitors patient's adherence to and tolerance of the nutrition care provided according to department standards and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Evaluates and monitors patient tolerances to enteral and parenteral therapies and recommends modifications as needed.
  • Selects and recommends appropriate type and method of nutritional support based on physiologic requirement and results from nutrition screen.
  • Determines appropriate oral or tube feeding formula to meet specific nutrient requirements.
    Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.

Teaches nutrition intervention principles to promote disease management and/or prevention:

  • Provides patient, family and caretaker dietary counseling and instruction, as requested by nursing or physician.
  • Educates nursing and medical staff about nutrition related topics as requested.
  • Plans and conducts group classes on nutrition related subjects for patients, public and professionals as requested.
  • Reviews and/or develops patient education materials.
  • Provides outpatient nutrition counseling services. Teaches nutrition intervention principles to promote disease management and/or prevention.
    Completes required documentation and charge entry for outpatient services per facility procedure.

Documents all relevant aspects of nutritional care in the patient medical record:

  • Records nutritional assessment data and develops nutrition care plans for individual patients based on department standards.
  • Makes recommendations for nutrition intervention according to acceptable diet therapy guidelines.
  • Enters chronological notes that document changes and/or progress toward nutritional goals.
  • Accurately calculates and records nutrient intake analysis data on patients as needed.
    Provides patient, family and caretaker dietary counseling and instruction, as requested by nursing or physician.

Coordinates clinical nutrition with food service operations for delivery of patient care:

  • Approves the therapeutic diet manual.
  • Approves all diets, patient menus and nutritional supplements.
  • Assists with the writing/revision of modified and house diets.
  • Evaluates menus for nutritional adequacy.
  • Provides in-service education regarding therapeutic diets to dietary staff. Provides guidance/training to dietary staff in the preparation and serving of therapeutic diets as necessary.
  • Attends department staff meetings, and other hospital meetings as required.
  • Aids in development and revision of department policies and procedures.
  • May be asked to assist in development and administration of clinical nutrition quality assurance program.
    Participates in evaluation of dietetic services.
