Summary
The Medical Coding Lead is responsible for leading, training, mentoring, and supporting medical record coding specialists while ensuring accurate and timely coding of encounters. This role includes monitoring completion of coding activities, reviewing and correcting charges, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulatory requirements, and maintaining the integrity of information within the electronic medical record. The Lead Coder also performs coding functions, assigning accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes, sequencing diagnoses and procedures, and abstracting data necessary for billing, compliance, reporting, and reimbursement.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of one of the following credentials:
- AHIMA RHIA, RHIT, CCS
- AAPC, CPC, CIC
- 2 – 3 Years of previous coding experience with demonstrated expertise in ICD-10-CM.
- 1-2 years surgery coding experience
Preferred:
- Any additional AAPC or AHIMA Specialty credential above minimum requirement
- 1 year of audit experience
- Associate’s degree in health information technology from an accredited program.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and coding guidelines.
- Previous experience in training, mentoring, auditing, or charge review.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) and encoder software systems.
